Brooklyn Nets are For Sale

Anou Enright January 13, 2015 Rumors No Comments on Brooklyn Nets are For Sale

netssaleWhen the Los Angeles Clippers sold for $2 billion last year, that undoubtedly peaked the interest of owners across the league. Especially given the fact when the Milwaukee Bucks were sold for $550 million a few months prior, that was the most any NBA team had ever sold for.

Naturally, a sale in the billion is only likely to happen in larger markets (for now), such as New York. Mikhail Prokhorov is selling his majority stake in the Brooklyn Nets, according to Bloomberg.

The Brooklyn Nets are for sale.

Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov retained Evercore Partners to sell the National Basketball Association team he bought in 2010, according to two people with direct knowledge of the matter.

The people requested anonymity because the matter is private.

Nets spokesman Barry Baum declined immediate comment. Dana Gorman, a spokesman for Evercore with The Abernathy MacGregor Group, declined to comment.

“As we have been saying for many months, team ownership is open to listening to offers,” said Ellen Pinchuk, a spokeswoman for Prokhorov. “That’s just part of the business. There is nothing imminent in terms of the sale of any stake in the team.”

Prokhorov, 49, the first foreign owner of an NBA team, holds 80 percent of the club and 45 percent of the Barclays Center, its 2 1/2-year-old arena which next season will house hockey’s New York Islanders. Only the team is for sale, the people said.
