If you want the inside scoop on what Kevin Durant is planning to do in NBA free agency this summer, don’t ask his mom. She doesn’t appear to know much more than we do.
From CSN Mid-Atlantic’s Ben Standig (h/t The Oklahoman):
Wanda Pratt, known by most as Kevin Durant’s mother, stopped by NBC4’s headquarters in Washington for a Facebook Live interview. The obvious question — will KD2DC happen — came up immediately and more than once.
If you were hoping for a major announcement about the upcoming free agent’s future plans, well, that’s just silly. It would also be crazy not to listen to the woman Durant praised as “the real MVP” after he received the NBA award in 2014.
“I don’t know what his ultimate decision will be,” Pratt said of her son, the star forward for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Durant surprisingly struggled from the field in Monday’s home loss to the Dallas Mavericks in Game 2 of their Western Conference first round series.
“They’re 1-1 [in the series]. He really focuses on his task at hand,” Pratt continued. “He’s very loyal to the Thunder so he felt it would be unjust to focus on other things while playing in the playoffs.”
It’s realy weird to try extracting information from Kevin Durant’s mom. She is, after all, the real MVP. Even if she knew what her son was thinking, it’s not like she would divulge his secrets publicly.
Plus, again, she in all likelihood probably doesn’t know. Durant himself probably doesn’t even know. The Thunder haven’t yet been bounced from the playoffs. Free agency is something you concern yourself after you know, for sure, you haven’t won a title where you are now.
And, yes, the Oklahoma City Thunder aren’t in line to win a title. If the San Antonio Spurs don’t get them in Round 2, the Golden State Warriors are expected to get them in the Western Conference Finals.
Still, until the Thunder are officially eliminated from title contention, Durant doesn’t have all the information he needs to make a final decision. Check back in July, when the end to this season, whatever it may be, has sunk in, and he’s had time to survey all of the teams that will be vying for his services.
