In D.C. this season, there has been so much attention paid to John Wall’s arrival, Gilbert Arenas’ long awaited departure from the club, and JaVale McGee’s participation in the dunk contest that many haven’t realized how the Wizards are actually performing on the court. The Wiz are now 13 – 35 on the season and boast a home record of 13 – 10. That’s not a bad home record for a young team. But take a closer look at those numbers. Yes, your math is correct. The Wizards haven’t won a game on the road yet this year.
Their most recent road loss in New Orleans to the Hornets just dropped them to 0 – 25 away from the Verizon Center. Overall on the season, they average 97 points as a team, and on the road they score 95 per game, so it isn’t as if there’s a huge drop off. In fact, on two occasions this season, they have lost overtime games on the road. So they’ve been close, but unfortunately this isn’t horseshoes.
The NBA’s record for most consecutive losses to start a season is held by the 1992 – 93 Dallas Mavericks who went 0 – 29 on the road to begin the year, but no team has ever gone winless on the road for an entire season. Right now, the Wiz are third on this list of dubious distinctions.
The Wizards are just 5 more consecutive road losses away from breaking that records held by the Mavericks, who ultimately won 4 road games that year. But fear not Wizards fans. Next up on the road schedule is the league’s worst team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, on February 13. Now, if they can’t pull that one out, then bring on the record books.
