NC State’s Exciting Freshman Trio Is the Best in College Basketball

August 19, 2010 – Allen Moll

CJ Leslie, Ryan Harrow, and Lorenzo Brown. Heading into the 2010 NCAA basketball season, these three players’ names are only known to hard-core NCAA and elite level HS basketball junkies, but come December when the season is well under way, I guarantee you that one or all three will be regulars on ESPN’s Sportscenter for their propensity towards highlight reel plays this season for the Wolfpack of NC State. Opposing teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference beware,……………Coach Sydney Lowe has assembled the most exciting trio of freshmen players in the game next season.

NC State is poised to make a major leap back towards national prominence, something which hasn’t been seen since the Jim Valvano led Pack went on their magical run to win the 1983 National Title. While that inspirational squad, and subsequent photo finish in the championship game, was led by names like Derek Wittenburg, Lorenzo Charles, and Thurl Bailey, this year’s squad could potentially be very good behind Leslie, Harrow, and Brown.

Easily the most exciting player of the entire freshman class this upcoming season has to be CJ Leslie. As a former teammate of John Wall at Word Of God in high school, Leslie has learned some valuable lessons from the now #1 overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft, when it comes to showmanship, athleticism, and finishing above the rim. Although listed as an undersized power forward at 6’7, Leslie will most likely play at small forward to greater showcase his amazing abilities as a slasher and high flying finisher. As we showcased previously, Leslie is a slightly shorter Kevin Garnett clone, since he continually goes hard, finishes strong, and has potential to be an elite level shot-blocker from the wing. If he improves his jump-shot to match his already through the roof athleticism, Leslie could be a lottery pick in next year’s NBA Draft.

While elite point guard prospect Ryan Harrow might fool you at first glance of his willowy 6’0 and 160lb frame, he is an outright assassin with the basketball. By exuding a high amount of athleticism similar to that of Leslie, Ryan is the definition of a scoring point guard. He has range out to the 3 point arc as well as the giddy-up to get to the rim seemingly at will. Possessing a lightning like quickness, he regularly finishes with authority, as he may just remind you of a young Allen Iverson, during the early Georgetown years. Just to prove it check out his outstanding performance at the Elite 80 Showcase last Fall.

At the shooting guard position, the Wolfpack have an underrated stud in Lorenzo Brown. He also has an amazing amount of bounce and athleticism to add to his prolific scoring abilities. Brown at times can be unstoppable to opposing defenders since he is at his best either coming off of screens or taking it straight to the rack, often finishing over an unfortunate defending player. Since he was unable to qualify with the rest of his ’09 HS class, Brown starred last season at Hargrave Military Academy alongside University of Pittsburgh commit, Isiah Epps. He is a terrific ball-handler, especially in the pick-and-roll and exudes the confidence and swagger to do pretty much anything on the basketball court. With his only downside being sometimes on the defensive side of the ball, Brown may prove to be the perfect compliment to Leslie and Harrow next season.

    These dudes are going to be this years Wall, Cousins, and Bledsoe

  • Jay

    LMAO- the Pack isn’t even sporting the best class in the ACC, much less the country. The only thing they will have in common with Wall and co., is the lack of hardware to show at the end of the year.

      @Jay,

      The articlewasn’t about the best recruiting class but the most talented trio of freshmen next season. True, other squads have better overall classes, but no one except possibly Kentucky can boast the sheer star power of Leslie, Harrow, and Brown. Carolina, Duke, and Wake Forest also have outstanding classes for next season in the ACC. All I’m saying is watch out for the Pack to make a push back towards respectability, sort of like Georgia Tech’s youngsters last season.

    barnes > leslie
    bullock > brown
    marshall = harrow

    thanks for playing.

    • Trav

      @ankles,
      what a joke! barnes may have been more consistent in high school, but Leslie’s gonna be the better player in college and the NBA. Bullock may be better or worse than Brown, but not by much either way. And Marshall is nothing compared to Harrow! Marshall is slow and can’t score! carolina fans just can’t handle not being the best and it’s eating your pathetic lives away!

  • Travis

    I agree with ankles…this trio might be good on paper and that happens often with NC State recruits but come ACC time I have a feeling they will be like NC State of old…big recruits…but LOWExpectations!

  • Travis

    By the way…whatever drug that you were on when you said they were the best incoming trio in the ACC or College Basketball should be taken in portions…seems like you took too much this time…

    • Trav

      @Travis,
      Apparently, you’ve never seen these guys play! Drugs may not be your problem, just ignorance!

  • travis

    Ignorance? Duke and UNC’s incoming freshman are better that the Lawn Mowing U.’s freshman. Leave it up to the wuffie fans to run these guys off just like they do with everyone else that has talent that comes through there. u get rid of a coach that takes you to the ncaa’s for someone that can barely get u to the acc’s. I can handle not being the best, I can’t handle being the worst, but obviously pack pride has excepted this. Win something sometime and then u can brag about ur “team”.

    • Trav

      @travis,
      OK, ignorance was being a little too nice…STUPID then. First of all, Duke’s incomers shouldn’t even be mentioned because they hold nothing to State’s class and second, Carowhina’s class is good…not better than ours though. And I’m pretty sure the Pack finished with a better record than the Tarholes last year so who’s to say anything about winning right now? I still remember not too long ago when Dean left and the University of Non-Compliance was an afterthought in basketball! Every program goes through tough times and the Pack is on it’s way back up whether you like it or not. Pack Pride doesn’t except shit unless it involves winning…why do you think we got rid of Sendek…granted he got us to the NCAAs, but not far once we got there. Besides, it is football season and we are not the ones under NCAA investigation for cheating…watch out Roy, they’ll be coming for you next!

  • Trav

    …and Lowe WILL be gone if he doesn’t produce with this team.

  • travis

    U have been going through tough times for 17 years? What an excuse. So u get rid of someone that takes u to 5 straight ncaa’s for someone that hasn’t taken u to one? That sounds about right. Let’s see.. 2 national titles in the last 5 years. U have ZERO in the last 2 decades. That is what I mean by win something! I recall a terrible year for us last year and UNC still swept the Crack Pride Parade. Pinch yourself and wake up from this dream u are in! Even with this talent u are bringing in, crack pride fans are always their own downfall. U will never be among the best and anyone that pays attention will confirm that for u. And according to crack fans, crack pride is on the way up every year… Everyone u say that to is still waiting on that to happen.

    • Trav

      @travis,
      What the hell are you talking about the last 20 years for? I’m pretty sure this is the year 2010 and that a new season is about to begin…things change…things change. You like to brag about the past…that sounds about right coming from a Carowhina fan. So what about sweeping the Pack who had less talent last year than my left nut…congratulations! My hands are clapping for you…dumbass! Last year’s tarholes might have been the worst display of coaching I’ve ever seen with that much talent ever! And you brag about sweeping a bunch of minor recruits and leftovers from the last regime? that’s the only team ya’ll swept last year and ya’ll played your best basketball of the season those two games…wow! I don’t even know why I’m wasting my time with this shit anyway…football starts this weekend and if I remember correctly, State has owned the UN-Cheaters the last several years! But of course you’re probably like every other bitch blue fan and do not like Carowhina football unless they are good.It’s amazing how many carowhina fans came out when Butch Davis arrived, but since the investigation they’ve all seemed to go back in hiding and just talk about bball. And you call yourselves true blue? you’re all the same. And “crack” pride? That’s original…I’d rather smoke crack than wear bitch blue!

  • Cameron Craziest

    I agree with Trav on the subject. ROY IS A BOYTOY.

  • jalik pender
