MJ vs. Kobe: Top 40 In-Game Dunks [Video]

July 16, 2010 – Allen Moll

With Kobe Bryant and the LA Lakers winning back-to-back NBA Titles, and Kobe personally winning his 5th ring, he is inching closer and closer to Michael Jordan’s 6 World Titles, which are universally regarded as the benchmark for greatness in the modern era. While it’s true that big men like Bill Russell and Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s accomplishments, when it comes to winning titles either equal or surpass MJ, but when it comes to All-Time great guards, Jerry West, Kobe, and the G.O.A.T, will arguably go down as the best 3 shooting guards that the game has ever seen.

So before we anoint Lebron, Wade, and Bosh in tandem as some of the greatest players of All-Time (even though they have only 1 chip between them),  let’s take a look at the  two players that have already proven to be great, by winning 11 titles in conjunction with being two of the greatest in-game dunkers of All-Time. MJ and Kobe have 3 Slam Dunk Titles between them and countless of other Hall of Fame type, in your face jams, that those who grew up anywhere in the late 80‘s to early 2000‘s, will forever remember as truly being sensationally mind blowing.

My man mamba9381 on youtube,  has put together a great compilation, or rather countdown, ranking the Top 40 in game dunks by both Jordan and Bryant that sure brings back some great memories of how the game was supposed to be played. For those of you that were too young to see just why Jordan was given the name “Air Jordan”, this video will school you on why. One noteable ommision was Jordan’s memorable facial dunk on Dikembe Motumbo, then doing his patented fingerwave back at “Deke.” While watching, I found myself on countless occasions just saying…………..Wow! Watch and enjoy.

Jordan at number two with the Ewing dunk is an insult to His Airness, no way any of Kobe’s dunks, hell ANY dunk in history is as skillful and at the same time posterizingly powerful!! The way he shakes off two defenders with a dummy run then posterizes the 7ft Ewing to put the ultimate exclamation point on the play is mind blowing. Should definitely be number one but with a name like mamba9381 I would of bet any money he’d put The Black Mamba at number one. Disgraceful.

@john, I have to agree with John on this one. Both are amazing finishers at the cup, but there is no way that the Jordan dunk on Ewing is not #1. Anyone who has played the game understands the degree of difficulty to be able to use all that energy to shake two defenders on the baseline and still have enough legs to not only dunk the ball but to jump high enough to rise over a 7 footer who is one of the best shot blockers in the game (at that time). To top it all off, if you watch the slow motion replay of that dunk, you will Jordan actually caught his mid forarm on the rim after he dunked it. Sick. Wicked. Nasty.

Nope. Kobe just came in later in the NBA. Kobe is better than Jordan. Jordan was drafted higher than Kobe, yet Kobe climbed up the ladder the hard way and even compared to Jordan! Now that’s tough! There were things that Jordan wasn’t able to do that Kobe did. Kobe just needs 1 more ring to silence the haters. They’re both great. But I’ll choose Kobe to take the last shot over Jordan.

After watching this video, I made a conclusion that both players have different styles in playing. Now before each group bash me and defended their heroes, I am just gonna say both have extra ordinary skills.
Most of the time, Kobe used his speed to outrun the defenders to the rim. Also since some of the dunks were from running, he also used his momentum to overpower the defender. He does have high vertical jump.
On the other hand, in my opinion, MJ was more shrewd players. If Kobe only fake once or twice before used his speed, MJ by far was more shrewd player than Kobe. Jordan also has more air time than Kobe. I don’t know who jumps higher, but definitely MJ defies gravity more than Kobe. That allowed MJ to maneuver more than Kobe.
In conclusion, both players are great on their own way, but MJ single-handedly took NBA to whole another level in the world. There won’t be a Kobe without MJ.

    MJ owns all. Period.

    • Jeff

@Mike, Amen! Jordan would torch Kobe in a dunk off.

    • Bradpineda 1

Nope. Kobe will torch Jordan, too. He did in a game! You should know your facts, dude! I understand you’re a Jordan-lover : ). But don’t underestimate Kobe.

  • Michael J

I’m a guy that believes Kobe doesn’t belong in the same sentence as. Jordan when it comes discussion about the best players in NBA history but that number one is pretty legit. Jordan’s dunk could be number. They both have their own style. Good compilation.

    • Randy

@Michael J, no one can compare yo mj

  • Bradpineda 1

Kobe is the man!!! C’mon y’all old school! I understand you witnessed Jordan, so all u can remember is him. You just don’t like the fact that someone like Kobe can match your Jordan. It’s a threat! And nobody likes a threat. So I feel y’all! Don’t hate the facts, take the facts! MJ won his 1st championship after 7 seasons!!! Kobe won his 1st ring after 3! Enough said…
