5th Grader Jaylin Fleming is a Mini Derrick Rose

April 17, 2010 – Dr. Browntorious

Jaylin Fleming Derrick Rose Prodigy5th Grade Baller Jaylin Fleming is from Chicago. Since Fleming is only 5’1″ tall, and he generally plays with kids up to nearly twice his age, he needs to be quick, and he needs to have handles. Mad handles. Who better for a 5th grader to look up to than Derrick Rose from his hometown Chicago Bulls. I hear Derrick Rose has a decent handle of his own, right?

The ‘mini-me’ comparisons are bound to happen between Rose and Fleming, especially after Rose recently agreed to meet and shoot around with the little fella.

But Fleming is nothing like an average kid his age. He is puttin’ in work on the hardwood. He lives, breathes, sleeps, and eats nothing but hoops. We thought we were hoop heads here at The Hoop Doctors, but we got nothing on this kids love for the game. And it’s starting to pay off already for him.

Aside from already being a YouTube sensation for the following video giving you a sneak peek into his lifestyle and work ethic, Jaylin is rated by many scouts as the top player for his age in the entire country. I wouldn’t be surprised if college programs already have this kid on their radar a whopping 8 years shy of when Jaylin will be ready to sign a letter of intent.

a kid that can bounce a ball. unheard of!

  • crackhead bob

the one person who influenced me most is my dad and my mom. LOL

the bible verse i like most is Phillipinos 3:16 – thou shall eat the flesh of the dog and be short.

  • Veruca

this kid’s mind is being poisoned by someone. he’s already quoting bible verses that he obviously has zero clue about. phillipines.

and what kind of real interviewer would ask a kid about a bible verse anyway. talk about a set up question.

a kid thats excels in phys ed. whoopee.

I believe poor kid is being influeneced by his father, he just want to make money using his son. sad!

His dad doesn’t look like a great athlete or that tall. This kid might hit 5’10 if he’s lucky. . Doesn’t look like he will have the hops or the athletic ability on any of the next levels. He can dribble but he’s not jumping out the building or lightning quick.

Looks like the dad is trying to get on the money train.

@SHARKSBREATH and everyone saying Fleming is too short: uhhh…check out the growth charts – 5’1″ is above the 97th percentile in height for an American male of 10.5 years old (the 97th percentile would be 6 foot 2). You might have to worry about Jashaun Agosto, who is reportedly 12 years old and 4 foot 10. But Fleming will not be 5’10; “lucky” would be more like 6’5.

His mind is being poisoned because he mispronounced Philippians? Okkkkkk?

And why does everyone assume that the Dad is just trying to use his son? Anytime the kids’ parents are mentioned in a piece like this, its the parents trying to make a buck off their child’s gift? Is it ever possible that the KID actually LOVES basketball? That he WANTS to get better at the game and be the best player on the team?

And I actually commend the father for focusing on education and creating a clear distinction between home life and basketball. Sounds like he’s doing his best to make sure his son has some balance in his life, and that he’s got his priorities in order.

Also sounds like there’s quite a few haters on this website too lol.

Brainwashed to love his family and have a sense of morality. How dare they.

  • Greg

He obviously has a long way to go and height and athletic ability will be the difference-maker for whether he’s a future pro or a high school baller. But there probably aren’t more than 1 or 2 kids his age with those ballhandling skills.

He’s focusing on school and playing the piano… who cares if he’s mispronouncing bible references? Give the kid a break, he’s 10!

  • Miami

Great player indeed, hopefully he succeeds, but damn it’s like as if he’s being forced to study the Bible a lot.

  • http://www.oneworldtosee.com/ Keed

Doesn’t sound like he is forced to read it to me. It sounded like his parents wanted to give him a good ground to start with life, work hard in school, study, then do what you love. Too many parents might see his ability and say, nurture that gift, you’re better, and then the kid just plays ball, neglects school and doesn’t have a future if they don’t succeed at the game.

another kid influenced by his father so he can make some money. sad!

  • Bud Lang

The lad certainly has talent in handling a basketball, and that’s great. I hope he does well as he advances through his school years. Regarding the bible, I don’t know how many kids his age read any book, outside their school classroom. But, the bible is often very difficult to understand, even for adults. Seems like his dad is pushing him in that respect.

  • jimbo

I guess the father is “damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t”! Let’s say he is trying to excel his son so he makes $$$. If it doesnt happen at least the kid will have a father who cared and spent time with him to advance at something he likes. The boy will go on to play high school ball and will obviously get a free ride to college. Say it stops there and he doesn’t go pro…..say he’s not good enough……At least he has an education and his father kept him focused on sports and kept him out of trouble. The country would be lucky to have more fathers like this. God speed young man…….and work on that vertical jump! Peace.

Not too long ago I invested in this super fast gaming laptop, with over 8 GBs of ram and it is so SICK! I can play the new WOW release, Need For Speed: MW, and Max Dirt Bike and with no lagg ever. I bought mine from AlienWare, all for like $500 greenbacks all in… pretty good deal in my opinion.
