We here at Hoopdoctors are big fans of Kobe Bryant’s game. He is the total package, elite scorer, supreme defender, and proven winner. The NBA’s current overall best player in the game. Although he has nothing left to prove, his drive and desire to succeed is among the league’s best. In this new multi-part series we will take a look back at some hidden gems caught on video showcasing some of the “Black Mama’s” biggest and best moments in his HS and NBA career.
Part Six – Buzzer Beaters and Game Winners
Kobe has proven to be at his best during a game’s crunchtime. If it is the end of a quarter or the last horn of a double overtime game, he comes through. Whether all fans likes him or not, Kobe is the most likely choice, out of any NBA player, to be picked to take a game’s final shot.

Do the Lakers have a shot at 70 wins?

….I don’t think so
In the past month I have heard Reggie Miller and Scottie Pippen say the Lakers will either win 70 games or have a chance to win 70 games. Well I am here to refute that claim and my top reason why I think it is silly both former players think they Lakers have a chance is the NBA is stacked this season.
The Association is in the best shape since MJ retired and although it took over a decade both conferences have teams that can handle the Lakers. Both conferences are loaded with talent and if the Lakers had a chance to win 70 games, they would be the clear favorite to win it all.
That is not the case at all, as there are five, possibly six teams if Shaq does anything positive, that have a legitimate chance of winning the NBA title. I am not sure the Lakers are the runaway favorites to win their own conference!
70 wins?! Child please.
The Lakers might win their division by 20 games this season and between the other four teams in the Pacific (PHX, GSW, SAC, LAC), they will beat the Lakers at least four times.
Wow, what a horrible division.
In the Northwest division, Denver and Portland will “Beat LA” twice each and the rest of the division (MIN, UTA, OKC) will beat them at least two times combined.
That makes ten losses in two divisions and I have not mentioned San Antonio, Dallas, New Orleans, Orlando, Boston, Cleveland, and Toronto.
70 wins?! LOL.
Maybe 65.
Deja Vu for 2010 New Orleans Hornets?

Casey graduated from the University of Southern California in 2005. He is currently a writer at BuyAthletes.com, Pac10Pros.com, TheHoopDoctors.com, and contributes to several travel sites. He is a huge fan of the NBA, College & International basketball, and Gary Payton.
I understand that the New Orleans Hornets have only played one game this season, but I was suffering from some mild déjà vu last night watching them. Are we in for No Bench Scoring 2.0?
Even though the Hornets won 49 games last year, they were blown out in the playoffs by the Denver Nuggets in 5 games. To make matter worse, they lost by an average of 30+ in each of their 4 losses, including a 58-point drubbing in Game 4…at home. That tied them for the worst playoff loss in NBA History. When was the last time it happened, you ask? In 1958!
Sorry, but I was getting sidetracked. The point of the article is not to rehash their poor post-season finish or possibly explain why Head Coach Byron Scott should have been asked nicely to vacate his office before last season. We are here to discuss their bench…or glaring lack thereof.
The 2008-09 Hornets reserves finished last in points per game (22.9) and tied for last in assists (4.1). How do they open up the 2009-10 season? They put up 19 points and 4 assists. Those numbers look pretty similar to last season, huh? Yes, they were playing the revamped & recharged San Antonio Spurs at home, but they lost by 17 and it wasn’t really even that close.
Let’s revisit their playoff experience again really quickly against the Nuggets, who had the third best scoring bench (33.9) and top bench in assists (8.0) in the regular season. In that 5-game series, the Hornets reserves averaged 23.4 & 3.0 versus the Nuggets’ averages of 34.6 & 6.8. That is not going to get it done.
Last night, the Hornets looked uninspired and that is not a good sign on opening night. If they want to make the playoffs again, they must step it up. I hope they do, at least for the sake of Chris Paul. If not, they can wave goodbye to the best point guard in the NBA.
“The Hoop Docs and ESPN Up in a Tree…..”
….K-I-S-S-I-N-G….you get the picture. We love ESPN, and apparently as of yesterday ESPN Sports Nation loves us too. For those of you thoroughly confused, yesterday we started off the day by being mentioned on ESPN’s Sports Nation Twitter account as the “Sports Site of the Day”:

Then we were subsequently given the royal treatment by being mentioned on air as the “SportsNation Site of the Day”. Aside from having an extremely good looking host (no we’re not referring to Colin), the new-er ESPN show “Sports Nation” is high energy, interactive, and a great watch for sports fans. It’s refreshing to see the big dogs put together a show that not only recognizes the rapidly growing element that is the sports blogosphere, but also participates with their readers in much the same way sports blogs do. That is Web 2.0, or 3.0, or whatever the hell we are into now….twitter, facebook, blogs, the works. To have The Hoop Doctors mentioned on their show, for us was like dunking on Kobe Bryant…in Game 7…NBA Finals, and hanging on the rim, maybe even a little face wash. You know what i’m talkin’ about ballers. Here’s the mention on the “Sports Nation” telecast, which also re-airs today at 1pm EST on ESPN2 if you’re so inclined to watch. And we recommend you do:

Boston’s Bench Looks Better Than Advertised

Michael Pina has a BA in English with a concentration in Journalism from the University of Delaware. He is currently living in his hometown of Boston. Mike is also the creator of the sports site Mike and Jeremy Like Sports.
Last night the Celtics proved to the league that they’re even deeper and more experienced than the title team of two seasons ago. Without Glen Davis, their first man off the bench last year, the Celtics still managed to outscore Cleveland’s bench 26-10 in an absolutely dominating effort that included three pointers, very aggressive defense and an up-tempo offense that kept Cleveland on their heels throughout the second half.
Who has the best starting five in the league is as much an open debate as which player is better, Lebron or Kobe. It could be the Lakers or it could be the Celtics, but what Boston has is a tough, physical, imposing front line ready and willing to step off the bench.
Shelden Williams, an oft maligned big man out of Duke who was a hair from going overseas before his NBA career could even wake up, stepped up in a huge way last night. He didn’t play like an all-star, looking a little lost in Boston’s extremely confusing defensive game plan several times, but what he did do was hustle.
Not the player who will ever fill up a stat sheet in a Celtics uniform, Williams’ play is more about the jostle and sweat he puts on the floor. Coming into a ball game and trying to throw Shaq out of position might be the task in the history of professional basketball, but Shelden came in and for the most part held his own. He boxed out players who were bigger than him and after just one game seems to understand what his role is.
In the backcourt, they have the tenacious Eddie House who seems to accumulate more three pointers than dribbles, which is actually something Doc Rivers dreams about being true. House is one of the most dangerous down town shooters in the league; his release is quicker than a pool stick hitting acue ball, but when he has the rock in his hands doing anything but bombarding the rim, things usually don’t end well. Last night he tried to thread the needle twice a la Jason Kidd. Both times the ball ended up out of bounds.
Newcomer Marquis Daniels was great. He showed a little bit of his versatile scoring ability, knocking down a three and finishing in traffic while defensively he was assigned to guard the best player in the world which he did about as well as anybody in the league can. I know it’s an extremely small sample, but with Daniels, instead of Pierce guarding the other team’s most dynamic scorer, it frees up the captain’s legs in the fourth quarter. Case in point, Pierce hit some huge shots down the stretch and was able to close out the game single-handedly, looking fresher than ever. I realize this was just the first game of the season, but saving as many minutes as possible will really add up come playoff time.
Rasheed Wallace showed Cleveland how dangerous he is, especially with his three point range. When it looked like the Cavs defensive strategy was to leave Kendrick Perkins wide open on the baseline for a few 15 footers, Doc Rivers simply subbed Wallace in and made the lineup almost impossible to guard. Defensively Wallace looked like another Garnett and when the two of them were on the floor together, Boston was extremely potent.
After getting out to a terrible start and a double digit point deficit before Shaq could even make it up and down the court, Boston looked a little out of synch. Over the next three quarters however, the Celtics bench wore down the best Cleveland could throw at them. After watching last night’s opener, there’s no debating who has the strongest roster in the league from 1-15.
NBA Season Tips Off – Celtics Send A Message

Allen Moll is an avid NBA and College Basketball fan who watches and studies games religiously and coaches youth basketball in his native Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. Allen is a regular columnist for thehoopdoctors.com, Bleacherreport.com, UpperDeckblog.com, and his own blog, Hoops Haven .
As the NBA season tipped off last night, two of league’s preseason favorites squared off in a match that could possibly be a preview of this season’s Eastern Conference Finals. With the Boston Celtics taking on the Cavaliers in Cleveland, the NBA got a dream matchup for fans, as Lebron was clearly the best player on the floor, with 38 points, but the trio of Pierce, Garnett, and Wallace, proved to be the best team, by winning, 95-89, getting their first victory in Cleveland since December of 2004. I know it’s early, but it appears the green and white are back.
The story lines were abundant as both teams took to the hardwood for the literal tip off of the NBA season. Celtic fans were given some bad news last weekend upon finding out that their newly resigned post presence off the bench, Glen “Big Baby” Davis, will miss significant playing time after breaking his thumb in a fist fight with a former high school teammate. Surely, because of the injury and bad behavior, team and possibly league suspensions are to follow. In his absence, Sheldon Williams, should soak up his minutes.
The hype surrounding both team’s newest offseason acquisitions, Shaq with Cleveland and Sheed with Boston, never really surfaced as both players played supporting roles for their teams. Rasheed Wallace, who came to Boston from Detroit in the offseason, seemed comfortable coming off of the bench, totaling 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 blocks. He played the role of perfect compliment to the Celtics potent lineup by helping to space the floor on offense to create open shots and by playing his usual top notch team defense, even guarding Shaq at times. It was evident that the Shaq/Lebron experiment will need some more time to mesh. Cleveland surely hopes to get more than the 10 points and 10 rebound effort from O’Neal if they hope to challenge for a NBA title. In my opinion, he failed to answer the question of how he and Lebron will share the painted area late in games, as opposing teams will undoubtedly employ the old “Hack-A-Shaq” technique of forcing the big man to make his free throws in crunch-time. Since Shaq is only effective down low, this at times will force Lebron to be more of a jump shooter, taking away his best attribute, getting to the basket for the “And One” play.
With that being said, James was his usual phenominal self, showing off a noticeably improved jump shot, on his way to a game high 38 points. One could argue that his two best moments in the game were on defense, where he made two highlight reel blocks on Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen dunk attempts. The first coming early in the 2nd quarter when Rondo was able to steal the ball and race for an apparent easy breakaway dunk, only to have Lebron swoop in from behind for the rejection, sending Rondo to the floor and slamming hard into the base of padded goalpost. He then sprinted to the corner to complete the play with a 3 point bomb, which was in essence a 5 point turnaround.
Kevin Garnett attempted to quiet his critics in his return to the hardwood after missing last season’s final 25 games and all of the postseason, with a 13 point, 10 rebound, 3 block performance. The “Big Ticket” showed almost no ill affects of the knee injury which shortened his ‘08-’09 season. To be picky, he could not convert on a dunk attempt in which a teammate threw him a lob to the basket, while his defender was fronting him. He pulled the ball back down, and sank a 5 foot fade away jumper on a play in which we all have grown accustomed to the former league MVP throwing down with authority.
The Celtics were led by Ray Allen’s 16 points, Rondo’s 10 assists, and Paul Pierce’s team high 23 points, many of which coming in the final minutes as the Cavaliers made a run to get within 4 points with just over a minute to play. It appears that Cleveland hasn’t fixed their issues from last season, since they were forced to rely on the tremendous skills of the reigning MVP, Lebron James, as the rest of his supporting cast was not a factor. It’s only one game, but the Cavs have some work to do, while the Celtics looked good on step one of their quest to win another NBA Championship.
Check out Lebron’s amazing block of Rondo:

Five Reasons To Watch The NBA This Season

Allen Moll is an avid NBA and College Basketball fan who watches and studies games religiously and coaches youth basketball in his native Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. Allen is a regular columnist for thehoopdoctors.com, Bleacherreport.com, UpperDeckblog.com, and his own blog, Hoops Haven .
Surely every offseason, between the NBA Draft and the beginning of November, hardwood hoop-heads, like myself, are just counting down the days until basketball comes full circle again. All of us just cannot wait for the seemingly endless team and conference previews and meaningless preseason games to come to a close so that we can truly see if all those “expert” predictions come true. Most true basketball fans will tell you that the college game is better because the players have nothing to lose and play like every game is their last, because…………….sometimes, it is. I am usually one of those people, but this NBA season is different. This could be one of those rare years where there is no clear cut favorite and there are numerous soap opera scenarios which could become either a Cinderella story line or an udder disappointment. If you’re still not convinced, here are 5 surefire reasons to look forward to the NBA season.
There Are At Least Five Teams Capable of Winning the NBA Championship
Competition should be fierce. The NBA Champion Lakers appear to have actually improved from last season. They better have, since every other contender has too. Even though the Western Conference is in a supposed “down” year, the upper echelon of teams, that include the Lakers, San Antonio, Denver, and Portland, will be jockeying for home court throughout the entire regular season. It will be interesting to watch: a)if Ron Artest can control his emotions and become the All-Star second fiddle to Kobe and help the Lakers repeat, b)if the addition of Richard Jefferson, Antonio McDyess, and Dejuan Blair is enough to bring the Spurs a fifth title, c)if Carmelo Anthony truly matures and becomes a MVP candidate, possible scoring champ, and leads the Nuggets to their first NBA Finals, and d) if Andre Miller can provide the veteran leadership that the young Blazers need to make them annual contenders.
In the East, Boston, Cleveland, and Orlando are the clear cut class of the conference, with all three having title aspirations. It will be interesting to watch: a)if Shaq and Lebron can coexist and give Cleveland it’s first title, b)if Kevin Garnett’s knee can withstand a full season and the addition of Sheed ensures Boston a return trip back to the Finals, c)if Vince Carter can adjust to playing with a dominant big man and defer to his new talented teammates, and d)if Joe Johnson takes the next step towards superstardom and leads a young Hawks squad deep into the postseason.
There Are So Many Former Superstars Coming Off of Injuries
Some of the best players that the NBA has seen in the past decade are coming off of major injuries. Virtually all or most of the players teams’ fortunes rest on their ability to return to All-Star status. The list of players attempting a full recovery reads like an All Decade Team: Gilbert Arenas, Tracy McGrady, Kevin Garnett, Elton Brand, Jameer Nelson, Amare Stoudemire, Al Jefferson, Jermaine O’Neal, and Michael Redd. It will be interesting to watch: if Arenas in Washington, Garnett in Boston, and Brand in Philly can make a big enough impact to be their respective teams to go to player in crunch time.
All Of The Talented Rookies
Every season it is fascinating to see how the nation’s best collegiate players games translate to the NBA. This year’s rookie class is no different as a multitude of talent has filtered into the professional ranks. Whether it is a lottery pick becoming a team’s building block for the future or a contributing player on an already good team, it is definitely fun to watch the growing pains as the rookie becomes accustomed to playing within each team’s new schemes. It will be interesting to watch a)if NCAA Player of the Year, Blake Griffin can continue to be the beast of a player he was in college and lead the hapless Clippers to the playoffs, b)if 7′3 shot blocking center, Hasheem Thabeet, under the tutelage of low post legend Hakeem Olajuwon, can become develop an offensive game to match his already dominant defense, c)if Tyreke Evans can fulfill his tremendous potential without a supporting cast on a bad team in Sacramento, and d) if Brandon Jennings sets a new trend by proving that HS players can go overseas instead of college to develop into good NBA players.
The Race To 5 Championships
Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, and Shaquille O’Neal are in select company. Each player has individually won 4 NBA titles and appear to be in a position to win a 5th. Kobe is in probably the best position to win #5,………. and then some, since at age 31, he is still in his prime and is on a young team which is built to compete for years to come. “The Big Fundamental“, Tim Duncan has quietly won 4 titles, if that is even possible. The Spurs have apparently realized that Duncan’s wheels have allot of mileage, and could start to break down in the near future since he has played in over 1,000 NBA games at such a high level. The Spurs window to win is definitely closing with his supporting cast also in their 30’s, thus the loading up on talent this offseason to give Duncan and Co. a chance to win #5. The “Big Shaqtus” is trying to accomplish a rare feat by winning an NBA title with 3 different teams. Although O’Neal has definitely starting to show some wear on his 37 year old body, he is in prime position to possibly win title #5 with the help of “King James” in Cleveland. O’Neal, and Lebron for that matter know that their team has a one year window, or face a dismantling in Cleveland since both players will be free agents in 2010.
We Should See Some New Teams Challenging For the Playoffs
Along with only a few teams that can be considered true title contenders, comes parity, meaning the bottom half of both conferences will have intense competition for playoff positioning. Never before will games that are played in November, be just as important as those played in March. There will be some annual bottom feeders who will challenge for a playoff spot. It will be interesting to watch: a)if Allen Iverson has enough in the tank to help lead the Grizzlies along with Zach Randolph to the playoffs, b)if Baron Davis, along with a talented supporting cast that includes Blake Griffin, Eric Gordon, and Marcus Camby has enough, c)Anthony Randolph, Steph Curry, Captain Jack and the young Warriors can stay out of the headlines and play some defense in order to make the playoffs, and d)if Coach Larry Brown can get “Crash“, Gerald Wallace and Tyson Chandler to “play the right way” and sneak into the postseason.
Allen Iverson In Memphis: Cancer or Catalyst?

Allen Moll is an avid NBA and College Basketball fan who watches and studies games religiously and coaches youth basketball in his native Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. Allen is a regular columnist for thehoopdoctors.com, Bleacherreport.com, UpperDeckblog.com, and his own blog, Hoops Haven .
For 13 NBA seasons, we have been witnesses to Allen Iverson’s inner fire which continues to burn today, even at age 33. Never have I seen a player with such heart, desire , and intestinal fortitude as the man simply known as “A.I.” Allen has taken his desire to to be the best on the court, along with his eventual Hall of Fame resume, and some sizeable baggage, to Memphis to attempt to lead a young and talented team into the postseason for the first time in 4 seasons. Iverson undoubtedly still has the physical tools to succeed, but will his fiery competitiveness and refusal to accept a “team first” mentality, destroy team chemistry and leave the franchise up in flames?
While Iverson’s heart is almost always in the right place, as evidence of his numerous charitable endevours and and his willingness to sacrifice his body for team, his head has not always followed suit. In spite of his unbelievable talents, Allen has somehow managed to create chaos in the locker room and leave his former team in much worse shape than when he arrived. The Denver Nuggets somehow have managed to get over the short marriage to Iverson to have had possibly their best season in franchise history. One has to wonder if adding A.I. to a roster filled with monster egos, even if it is for one year, is the right move for a franchise filled with impressionable young talent.
Iverson has never been the model teammate. He has clashed with teammates and coaches at virtually every stop in his career. It’s almost not his fault, since he was always the supreme talent on every team he was on, dating back to high school, and treated that way. At a young age Iverson was the typical superstar athlete who lived the rock star life even though he came from humble beginnings in Hampton Beach Virginia. Whether it was help with grades or getting out of trouble, his family, coaches, and friends always helped make things right for the future hoops star. He even was pardoned by the governor of Virginia while in high school when he was facing 15 years in prison for insighting a riot at a local bowling alley. His legendary tussles with his head coaches also is a reason for concern. The Sixers went through numerous ringleaders coaches to try and force feed Iverson the team concept, before Larry Brown finally got through. Even though he had several mini tussles with Brown, Allen finally felt respected and conformed to the Hall of Fame coach’s strict ways. The results were mutltiple scoring titles, an MVP award, and a trip to the NBA Finals in ‘01.
Disaster soon followed when the Brown/Iverson relationship again soured over Iverson’s occasional refusal to participate in practices and team appearances. After Brown left the Sixers in ‘03, Iverson immediately clashed with new head coach Jim O’Brien. O’Brien was relieved of his duties near the end of the season and Chris Ford took over with the same results, Iverson at odds with another coach. Similar to his final days in Detroit, Iverson was paid to stay away from the team for the remaining games of the season because of injury insubordination. And even though he still scored at an alarming rate in Denver, he regulary was at odds with George Karl, then we all know how things ended up with the Pistons. He has been called selfish, arrogant, a ball hog, and even a thug by teammates and opposing players alike.
Iverson has had many off the court incidents for allegedly possessing an unregistered handgun, public drunkeness, speeding, numerous domestic disputes(where he locked his wife outside their home naked), using his posse of bodyguards to assault patrons at a club, and even for urinating in a garbage can inside an Atlantic City casino. We all keep waiting for Allen to “grow up” but this apparently will never happen. he has forever lived the life of the pampered athlete where there aren’t any consequences.
On the flip side, A.I.’s offensive prowess is arguably Hall of Fame material. His career scoring average of 27.1 ppg ranks fifth All-Time. His resume is stellar with 10 All Star appearances, 7 All NBA Team Selections, 4 scoring titles, 1 MVP, 2 time All Star MVP, and has led the league in steals 2 times. What better a person to teach the young and talented Grizzlies players like O.J. Mayo, Rudy Gay, and Hasheem Thabeet on how to succeed in the NBA?
At age 34, has “The Answer” finally matured, and is willing to play mentor to Mayo, Conley, and Gay, or will he and “Z-Bo“, Zach Randolph poison the Grizzlies roster with their bad behavior and leave the Grizzlies with yet another lottery pick next season? There’s no doubt that part of Memphis’s motivation for bringing in Iverson is to help put butts in the arena and sell merchandise. But which Iverson will they get? I’m betting on the negative, since even though he is injured, rumors have it that once healthy, he will once again be forced to come off of the bench!
Grab your popcorn. Either way it should be entertaining in Memphis this season.
Which Iverson are the Grizzlies getting?
The Good
The Bad
