Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube Think Kobe’s #8 Jersey Should Be Retired Now

Snoop Dogg Ice Cube

February 27, 2009 – Dr. Dime

Y’all are going to love this awesome video of Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube debating which Los Angeles Laker greats already have had their jersey retired, and which ones should be retired. The debate took place behind the scenes of the show Dogg after Dark. Snoop clearly wants Michael Cooper’s hoisted. What they both seem to agree on is that Kobe Bryant’s #8 Jersey should be retired now that he’s not using it any more. These guys are both regulars at Laker games and definitely know the game.

Thanks to All Balls Don’t Bounce for the tip…

Video of the Day: Barbosa Dipsy-doo to J-Rich

Leandro Barbosa

February 27, 2009 – Dr. Dime

Last night following the Phoenix Suns vs. LA Lakers game, I had to disagree with just about everything Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith of the TNT crew had to say. However one of the only things I could agree with them on, was that the following play was definitely the ‘Highlight of the Night’. Leandro Barbosa was certainly channeling the injured Steve Nash on this particular sequence, in which he runs the break and gives Jason Richardson a beautiful behind-the-back pass in traffic to free him for the dunk. What I love about J-Rich is that he didn’t just lay it home like many would have done in that situation in traffic. Instead he put a little extra mustard on it. Those are the type of plays that get your team energized. Unfortunately for the Suns, shortly after that play the Lakers went on a huge run to break the game open and cruise in for the victory.

Regardless of wins and losses, this play was just too sweet to go to waste. Suns fans, watch it over and over, as this could be your future post Nash/Shaq. Check it out:

Sneak Preview of Dennis Rodman in Upcoming ‘Celebrity Apprentice’…

Dennis Rodman Donald Trump

February 26, 2009 – Dr. J-Water

Who loves the hit TV Show ‘The Apprentice’? Okay and which of you who responded yes, love NBA Basketball? Well be prepared to get excited for this sneak peak video of this weekend’s first episodes of the latest season of “Celebrity Apprentice.” This season there are many Celebrities i’m sure you’ll enjoy watching (including the Playboy Playmate), however we are featuring the video because of the participation of former NBA All-star Dennis Rodman. That’s right folks, ‘The Worm’ and arguably the greatest NBA rebounder of all-time will be squaring off against some funny men like Tom Green and Andrew Dice Clay, and some fiesty women in poker star Annie Duke, and talk show guru Joan Rivers.

The first episode will be airing on Sunday 3/1 @ 9/8c on NBC. The first task for Trump’s 16 apprentice-wannabes will be to sell as many cupcakes as possible in New York City. The Hoop Doctors would like to thank NBC for supplying us with this video to share with our readers. Sparks should fly on this one…..here is a video preview of the latest celebs to take part:

And here is some video of some of the first conflict that Dennis Rodman has with another team member, the one and only Andrew Dice Clay! How long do you think it will take for Dennis Rodman to blow up and get kicked off the show? Anyone want to take that bet? Apparently he’s been saying in interviews he really tried to show another side of himself, than the party animal so many people have come to know. Check it out:

The Nextology of Michael Jordan: Part IV – Harold Miner

The Next Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls

February 25, 2009 – Dr. Anklesnap

The Hoop Doctors love Michael Jordan. That’s got to be pretty obvious to everyone by now. So in honor of Michael, and to discourage the media from pretending to be clairvoyant in the future when it comes to comparing young ballers to the greatest to ever play, every week I will be shining a little light on each of the media’s shortcomings when it has come to these ridiculous and presumptuous predictions.

These posts are not intended to disrespect any of the players compared to Jordan in any way. They all had excellent careers and were or are tremendous basketball players. It is not your fault someone with very little knowledge of the game or even the skill to play this game decided to call you the “Next Jordan”. Part IV to my series called “The Nextology of Michael Jordan” will be looking at Harold ‘Baby Jordan’ Miner:

But to take a good look at how different their careers were, I think you always have to start off by taking a birds eye view of the comparison by checking out their individual career stats. Here is the statistical comparison below in this chart:

H.M. Stats: 9.0 ppg 2.2 rpg 1.2 apg 0.4 spg 0.1 bpg .460 FG% .311 3P% .785 FT%
M.J. Stats: 30.1 ppg 6.2 rpg 5.3 apg 2.4 spg 0.8 bpg .497 FG% .327 3P% .835 FT%

Of all of the players in this series to be compared to Michael Jordan by the media, Harold Miner is definitely the least deserving. Once again this isn’t a knock on Harold Miner, he was a great leaper and two time dunk contest winner, but his actual all-around game was seriously lacking. In fact he only ended up playing 4 seasons in the NBA before failing to make the Toronto Raptors squad in 1996 and quietly walking away from pro basketball.

Harold Miner will always be remembered as the guy with amazing vertical leap. After being drafted 12th overall by the Miami Heat in 1992, Miner quickly earned the nickname “Baby Jordan” due to his ridiculous leaping ability. He never failed to entertain in a dunk contest, and won both the 1993 and 1995 contest. I will never forget the 1995 contest when he upset the field by taking down the defending champion and heavily favored Isaiah Ryder. Just one year earlier Ryder had shocked the world by putting the ball through his legs on a dunk coined the “East Bay Funk”. For me Miner will always be known for the style and flash he brought to the reverse dunk called the “Bread and Butter”.

But back to what counts for a minute…..on court play. Miner was all flash and very little substance. He was not a great defender, and although he shot a decent percentage, he was often in the coaches bad books due to poor shot selection. Those coaches, Alvin Gentry and Kevin Loughery, never really gave ‘Baby Jordan’ much burn. Miner only averaged 18 minutes per game throughout his short career.

After retirement, word has it that Harold Miner is now a real estate investor in Las Vegas and has continually shied away from the media and taking any interviews…

Tell us your thoughts below on Harold Minor being once called ‘The Next Jordan’ and ‘Baby Jordan’…..Also stay tuned next week for Part V in the “Nextology of Michael Jordan” series by Dr. Anklesnap.

‘Sneak’-a-Peek: Nike Air 1/2 Cent (Half Cent) – Penny Hardaway

New Shoe Release|Nike Air 1/2 Cent

February 24, 2009

Woooo eeee these are some sweet looking kicks, right? The Nike Air 1/2 Cent’s are set for full release on March 7th, 2009. Word on the street is they are going to retail at around $190 when they drop, put pairs found in early release at limited locations in the next week will be selling at $200-$215.

The Nike Air 1/2 Cent is a hybrid shoe that is based on the best features from four different Penny Hardaway signature shoes. There is a lot of buzz already starting to roll around these kicks. The die hards and collectors will love the innovative look and feel, and the ballers will love the comfort and performance you get with most of the past Penny signature sneaks. Oh and the name is a pretty cool play on words of it’s predecessor’s name Penny. Then again since it’s based on on 4 different Penny shoes, shouldn’t it be called the Nike Air 1/4 Cent?

Devin Harris is Now Legendary

Devin Harris New Jersey Nets

February 23, 2009 – Dr. Dime

Devin Harris has a flair for the dramatic. The video below will be only the second video of Harris we have featured on The Hoop Doctors, yet it will most likely be replayed as often if not more than the first. The first was this summer’s UK Streetballer Stuart Tanner hustling Harris. This second one below could very well by my number one all time favorite buzzer beater to win a game.

Why?

Because Harris was obviously fouled. And watch the replay carefully young ballers. Instead of acting on your instant impulse to turn to the ref and grimace or complain, Harris never gave up on the play in the final seconds. He heaved up a miraculous shot from half court. And sure it may be once in a lifetime that you’ll hit that shot, but you never know.

Right Mr. Harris? Legendary Sir, Legendary. That could be the new shot of the decade…

Iverson is still the Answer, Not the Problem

Detroit Pistons Allen Iverson

February 23, 2009 – Dr. Anklesnap

The Detroit Pistons are drowning and no one seems to want to throw them a life preserver. With this weekend’s Pistons drubbing by King James’ Cavaliers, the Pistons moved to .500 basketball at 27 wins and 27 losses. Most Eastern Conference teams these days can be easily forgiven for getting blown out by the Cavaliers, as this has become common place, however the Pistons are the losers of six straight. For die hard Pistons fans this is inexcusable.

I don’t blame Pistons fans for being angry however I get upset when I hear the fans put all the blame on Allen Iverson. Just as he has been his whole career, Allen Iverson is capable of being one of the top scorers in this league. He’s still lightning fast and hardwired to score with ease. I’m sure of this. What i’m unsure of however is whether it’s the Detroit Pistons coaching staff and their system that is holding him back, or if it’s Allen Iverson himself holding back. Maybe both.

Every pre or post-game interview I see with Allen Iverson these days he says the same things. He talks about playing team ball, trying to fit into the system, sacrificing for the good of the team, increasing his passing numbers, working hard on his defense, and doing the best he can to help his team win. I look at every one of those statements and I think to myself “Does Allen Iverson believe Joe Dumars is unfamiliar with his game?” Repeat after me, “Joe Dumars does not live in a bubble.” I’m pretty sure Dumars was well aware of what he was getting when he traded Chauncey Billups for Allen Iverson. Except for one thing……he didn’t actually get it.

Dumars along with the rest of the world knows Allen Iverson is a prime time scorer, and a surefire hall of famer for one reason only. He can light up the scoreboard. So why in the world is Allen Iverson trying to be a team guy? If the Pistons want to win, Allen Iverson needs to go back to being a volume shooter. He needs to once again cheat off his man on defense and use those lightning quick reflexes and veteran instincts to get league leading numbers in steals. He needs to slash to the lane on every second possession sacrificing his body to get league leading numbers in free throw attempts. Why? Because that’s where he can help you. He’s one of the best all time at those things. What he’s not very good at is being the team guy that shoots only 15 shots a game, and tries continually to get his teammates involved in the offense before himself.

The sooner the Pistons can accept Allen Iverson’s faults and weaknesses the sooner they will be able to reap the rewards of trading for him. Everyone in Detroit, including Allen Iverson, is trying to make Iverson play like Chauncey Billups. If Dumars wanted Chauncey Billups they wouldn’t have traded him. Why not give Allen Iverson a chance to play like Allen Iverson. It can’t hurt right? The Pistons are already on a 6 game losing streak, and slowly slipping out of playoff position in the East.

The Pistons management and coaching staff need to realize they have a golden opportunity with their current roster to get back to their winning ways. Step #1 is throw out their entire offensive system. They need to look at ways they can get Allen Iverson the ball on virtually every possession, set screens for him, and let him create. Let him be a volume shooter. Let him get to the free throw line 10-12 times a night. Let him shoot through slumps without a conscious. Then use your athletic big men, Rasheed Wallace, Antonio McDyess, and Tayshaun Prince to rebound the hell out of the ball. Considering this is Detroit, shouldn’t the fans appreciate a blue-collar work ethic and playing style from their bigs anyways?

Let Rasheed Wallace shoot threes, Let Allen Iverson be a volume shooter, Let Rip Hamilton just move to open space and take open jumpers. I think if the Pistons coaching staff just lets all of their key players play to their strengths on offense, they will be happier and probably get back to playing hard on defense and protecting the paint like they used to.

What do the Pistons have to lose?
