Video: Bynum Injures Knee, Kobe’s Pained Facial Expression…

Andrew Bynum Kobe Bryant

January 31, 2009 – Dr. J-Water

Andrew Bynum worked hard to rehabilitate from his last knee injury. The Lakers have really been on a roll and much of that success has been credited to the present day twin towers of Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol. Kobe Bryant is one of the greatest players in the game, but even he knows that without a good supporting cast, winning ain’t easy. That’s why Kobe Bryant had a look for severe pain and anxiety on his face tonight when he saw Andrew Bynum on the hardwood writhing and screaming in pain as he clutched his knee. Laker’s fans took a collective gasp as Bynum went down again….and i’m sure all Lakers fans are collectively praying that surgery won’t be necessary.

We’ll keep you posted as we get more information, but for now here is a video replay of the play where Bynum gets hurt, and a replay of Kobe’s facial expression that says it all:

Kendrick Perkins Does The Hit And Run

Kendrick Perkins Boston Celtics

January 31, 2009 – Dr. Dime

Who doesn’t love the Boston Celtics? Surprisingly they are quite a few haters out there. Personally I think there are always going to be fans that hate the current champs, or any other team that finds some success. But last night I cringed when I saw Kendrick Perkins grab Jason Maxiell around the neck in a headlock and throw him to the ground for seemingly no good reason.

Now granted, I realize we can’t hear everything that is being said on the court, so for all we know Maxiell may have made some mama joke about Perkins old lady. But I doubt it. Most likely Perkins had that enforcer/tough guy hat on and wanted to send a message with a hard foul. It turned out to be a little too hard, as Perkins received a Flagrant 2 and was immediately ejected from the game.

I’m old school when it comes to the rough stuff. I think there has to be high level of physicality in the game. There is no room for malicious plays but there is room for enforcers. This is a man’s sport. I will admit that Perkins went too far on the play and fouled a little too hard and shouldn’t have grabbed Maxiell around the neck. But my biggest concern was about how Perkins yanked him to the ground then turned and ran away. If you are going to try and play the tough guy, at least man up enough to stand there and face your opposition and look him in the eye when he gets up. Don’t run away like Carmelo Anthony’s backpedaling hit and run against the New York Knicks last year.

The league will undoubtedly be reviewing this play as we speak. They will be making a decision on fines and suspensions for Perkins. So while the league executives are doing so, why don’t you take a look at the play below and tell us what you think the fine/suspension should be….if any:

Karl Malone’s Home Video with his Kids…

Karl Malone

January 30, 2009 – Dr. J-Water

I have to give a big hat tip to You’ve Been Blinded for this video find. I always get some enjoyment watching NBA Stars past or present in a more ‘everyday life’ type setting. Seeing them live normal lives away from the court is a nice reminder that they are just regular folk, who just so happen to be able to ball like its nobodies business….

In this home video retired NBA star and second All-time NBA leading scorer, (now only 5 spots ahead of Shaq) Karl Malone is chillin’ out while his kids are bugging him to go shopping for……Bra’s??

Yeeeahhh….ummmmm……me too! Just enjoy the video:

Shaquille O’Neal passes Hakeem Olajuwon on the NBA’s All-time Scoring List

Shaquille O'Neal and Hakeem Olajuwon

January 29, 2009 – Dr. J-Water

Heading into tonight’s game in Phoenix between the Suns and their long time rivals the San Antonio Spurs, Shaquille O’Neal was trailing the great Hakeem ‘The Dream’ Olajuwon by a mere 5 points on the NBA’s All-time Scoring List. Midway through the first quarter Shaquille O’Neal spun on Tim Duncan and threw down a powerful two-hander for the sole possession of 7th on the All-time list.

Shaq is one of the greatest centers to ever play this game. Some may even say the greatest. But whichever side of that fence you sit on, one thing is for sure and that is Hakeem Olajuwon is a Hall of Fame center who Shaq respected. Hakeem Olajuwon is one of the only centers in the NBA to ever go head to head with Shaq in a series long battle and come out on top. I don’t mean just winning the games, but head to head outperforming Shaq to the point of bringing Shaq down to size. And Shaq’s a large large man. When it comes to Centers Shaq respects the great ones, George Mikan, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Tim Duncan. So I found it quite fitting that Shaq was putting a post move on one player from that list (Tim Duncan) while scoring to make history passing another great from that list (Hakeem Olajuwon) in the NBA scoring department.

If you want to track Shaq’s progress this season moving up the NBA All-time Scoring Chart, here is the stats heading into tonight’s game against the Spurs:

  1. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar  38387
  2. Karl Malone               36928
  3. Michael Jordan            32292
  4. Wilt Chamberlain         31419
  5. Moses Malone             27409
  6. Elvin Hayes                27313
  7. Hakeem Olajuwon        26946
  8. Shaquille O’Neal          26941

I’m a tad bit embarrassed to say this but when I think back to all of the great battles between Shaquille O’Neal and Hakeem Olajuwon, especially that Houston sweep of the NBA Finals when Shaq was with Orlando, I can’t help but think about that funny Taco Bell commercial they did together. Here it is if you don’t recall:

And even though the head to head matchup between O’Neal and Olajuwon that most people will remember is the Olajuwon waxing of O’Neal to lead the Houston Rockets to a sweep of the NBA finals for the title in 1995, Shaq certainly had his moments against ‘The Dream’ as well. Here is one that comes to mind:

Robinson hoping to give Dwight ‘Superman’ Howard some KryptoNATE!

Nate Robinson

January 29, 2009 – Dr. Browntorious

Last night when I was watching the game recap of the New York Knicks vs. Atlanta Hawks game I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at the broadcast crews call on the Nate Robinson power dunk. The broadcast crew was right in the middle of talking about how Dwight ‘Superman’ Howard was going to win the dunk contest again, then Nate Rob throws down a massive two-handed dunk off an alley-oop. Immediately the call goes something like this:

“I think i’m going to give my vote to Dwight Howard for sure…”

“Whoa…but Nate Robinson’s going to have some KryptoNATE for him!….”

For a guy that’s only listed at 5′9″ tall, it’s soooo ridiculous that Nate can not only get up that high, but that Duhon has enough confidence in Nate’s leaping ability that he can throw a lob pass from the top of the key, beyond the arc. That’s just silly to think about. Here’s the replay of the dunk if you missed it….

Another Evolution…..Mo Williams of the Cleveland Cavaliers

Mo Williams Cleveland Cavaliers

January 28, 2009 – Dr. Anklesnap

I’ve been reading some really excellent player posts lately titled “The Evolution of…X”, with X being a player’s name. Two recent examples that come to mind are this Lebron James piece over on BallerBlogger, and this Andrew Bynum piece over at Empty the Bench.

After watching last night’s game between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Sacramento Kings, it was obvious how much another player has evolved this season, that’s Mo Williams. After being traded from Milwaukee to Cleveland, there were a lot of folks excited about having another scoring threat in the Cavs lineup by figuring that should free Lebron from being double and triple teamed, and add a much needed scoring punch to the Cavaliers offense. You see, Cleveland had been one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference the last few years based on sheer defensive prowess and Lebron’s offensive ability. But Lebron alone was not enough of an offensive threat to get by teams like the Boston Celtics who have both the defensive intensity and couple that with three or four offensive juggernauts.

What we have seen since the season started, and the Cavaliers began assembling this amazing record, is that Mo Williams at the point is creating more ball movement, more scoring, and surprisingly has not hurt their defense at all. With Lebron getting so much defensive attention at the point forward position he’s playing, Mo Williams has been getting quite a few open looks and has even become quite adept at either cutting to open space (a-la Rip Hamilton), creating his own shot or drive (a-la Allen Iverson), or knocking down the outside shot (a-la Ray Allen). Now clearly Williams isn’t doing any of those things quite as good as the players mentioned in brackets, but he is doing enough at all of those things to get noticed.

Mo Williams is evolving, he’s producing, and the Cavaliers are winning. It may be because he’s more open due to playing with King James, or it may be the added confidence of finally being a contributer on a highly successful team. But whatever the reasons are, no one can deny that Mo Williams is playing the best ball of his career. And as the season goes on he seems to only be getting better. Could he be the missing piece to the Cavaliers and Lebron James breaking through this year to win it all?

Check out the Mo Williams highlights from last night where he dropped 43 points, 8 boards, and 11 assists……good work brah:

Shaq Loves His Hugs and Kisses

Shaquille O'Neal Superman

January 27, 2009 – Dr. Dime

Everyone knows Shaquille O’Neal is a comedian and sometimes a prankster. So just when you think you’ve seen and heard it all from the Big Diesel he does something else that surprises you and makes you laugh hysterically. Last night in the game between the Washington Wizards and Phoenix Suns, Shaq had thousands of Wizards fans in Washington laughing hysterically. And that’s no easy task, considering the Wizards have the worst record in the league right now.

Caron Butler drove hard to the cup, and Shaq being the lone defender between Caron and the cup fouled him hard. To be sure there were no hard feelings between him and Caron, Shaq followed through on the foul by grabbing Caron, pulling him in close for a big hug, then kissed Caron on the top of his head. Caron laughed, the crowd laughed, and Shaq looked serious. What a guy, what a comedian. Regardless of what his detractors say, Shaq is good for the game, and he’s playing ball at a really high level right now. Shaq ripped apart the Wizards last night for a game high 29 points, to go along with 8 rebounds.

Check out Shaq’s hugs and kisses for yourself….
