Orlando Magic Apparently Set to Hire Former Pacers Coach Frank Vogel

Frank Vogel will not be spending much time on the unemployment line.

After head coach Scott Skiles, who was hired only last summer, abruptly stepped down from his post, the Orlando Magic are now reportedly set to sync up with Vogel, who was essentially canned by the Pacers not two weeks ago, according to Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel:

This is the perfect fit for the Magic. Vogel is like an extension of Skiles, someone who values defense and grit above all else, and he comes without comparable baggage. He isn’t known for burning out his players or torching bridges with an organization.

And he has experience coaching youngsters. Paul George wasn’t always a superstar under Vogel, and he dealt with Lance Stephenson in Indiana as well. He also didn’t chain rookie Myles Turner to the bench as the Pacers chased a playoff spot last season. Should he have played him more? Maybe. But he has been open to working with kiddies and figures to be a better overall face for a rebuilding organization.

Really, then, the Magic owe Skiles a hearty “Thank you.”

His voluntary exit seems to have paved the way for an upgrade’s arrival.
