Robert Horry has had the opportunity to play with many all time great teams and players in his career, serving as a valuable and clutch role player for seven NBA championship teams.
He has had his high moments, the game winning shot in Game 4 of the 2001 western conference finals, his big shot in Game 5 of the 2005 NBA Finals, and his low moments, throwing a towel on former Phoenix Suns Head Coach Danny Ainge and checking Steve Nash into the scorer’s table during Game 4 of the 2007 western conference semifinals (Suns fans will never forget!), but he will always be a legend for his addition to great teams.
Some of the Hall of Fame big men he played with include Shaq, Tim Duncan and Hakeem Olajuwon.
Horry gave his two cents on which big man he preferred between Hakeem and Duncan and in his mind it wasn’t even close.
Here are some quotes from Horry about Duncan, Hakeem and Manu Ginobili being overrated:
“When we played San Antonio one time and Tim was killing me in the block, Phil refused to double-team Tim to get the ball out of his hands,” Horry said. “And Dream was 20 times better than Tim Duncan.”
“Let me just say this: You got yours because, if Manu Ginobili would have did the things he was supposed to do, I would have had like 10 championships.”
Horry clearly is quite the exaggerator (we all know that guy) and clearly has some sort of vendetta against Manu Ginobili which is bizarre. While I am sure you can argue that Hakeem was a better player than Duncan and he very well may have been, to say he was 20 times better than Duncan is a joke.
I think the greatest lesson we are all learning this postseason is just because some of the playoff legends we canonize have earned their stripes in the trenches on the court, they have biases and are as petty as any other human being off the court and not necessarily valuable or credible resources for good analysis of other players.
