The Portland Trailblazers were active during yesterday’s final day for trades and ended up acquiring four new players. The problem is however they only sent out two players who had a roster spot. That puts them over the limit of 15 active players on roster. So needing to cut two players, in a move not all that surprising they cut Chris Johnson. However, in a move a bit more surprising they cut former #1 draft pick Greg Oden.
That puts Portland’s roster at 17 players, with two players needing to be released so that Portland is at the maximum of 15 players.
Multiple reports indicate that No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden will be one of the players waived. (via Blazers Edge)
It was not all that surprising the Blazers would cut Oden given that he is often injured, and has spent a lot more time collecting a pay check and rehabbing than on the hardwood. But with that said, it’s still a bit shocking given the expectations for Oden when his career began. It’s hard to fathom given the news that he was once drafted ahead of Kevin Durant as the #1 overall draft choice.
His career isn’t necessarily over given how young he is, but Oden is definitely facing an uphill battle.
