Nico Harrison Confirms Jason Kidd Will Lead Mavericks Next Season

Despite recent speculation, Dallas Mavericks President Nico Harrison made it clear that Jason Kidd is staying put in Dallas. Jason Kidd Mavericks coach 2025 is a certainty at this point.

“Is that still out there about J-Kidd? I thought I shut that down. He will be the coach next year,” Harrison said during his post-draft press conference. Source

The comments come just days after rumors suggested Kidd was in talks with the New York Knicks about their head coaching vacancy. Reports even claimed the Knicks had reached out to request an interview, but Dallas declined to grant permission.

Kidd, who guided the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in 2024, remains under contract and appears committed to leading the franchise into the 2025–26 season and beyond. Harrison added that an extension for Kidd is something they’ll address later this offseason.

What This Means for the Mavericks

  • Continuity: With Kidd remaining, Dallas retains stability on the sidelines heading into a critical year.
  • Leadership: Kidd has earned the trust of both players and front office—especially with recent roster moves, including drafting Cooper Flagg No. 1 overall.
  • Rumors Shut Down: Harrison’s firm stance ends speculation and allows the team to focus fully on next season.

Jason Kidd’s tenure in Dallas hasn’t been without scrutiny, but his results speak volumes. He led the Mavericks to the Western Conference Finals in 2022 and followed that up with a trip to the NBA Finals in 2024, re-establishing the team as a legitimate contender in the West. His defensive schemes, ability to manage star players, and calm sideline demeanor have made him a favorite among the players and front office alike.

While the Knicks have been searching for a new head coach following a disappointing playoff exit, Kidd was viewed as a top-tier candidate due to his prior experience in New York and his success in Dallas. However, that window is now firmly closed, with Harrison making it known that Kidd remains part of the Mavericks’ long-term vision.

This confirmation also signals stability for a Mavericks roster that continues to evolve. With Luka Doncic being moved to LA, and the Mavs still wanting to see the impact of getting Anthony Davis, and the addition of rookie sensation Cooper Flagg, Dallas is doubling down on its core leadership on the bench to give them that stability.

For Mavericks fans, this is welcome news. With Kidd staying and a new wave of talent arriving, Dallas looks locked in for another deep playoff run in 2026.
