Here’s something you don’t hear everyday.
Jason Terry, though still playing for the Houston Rockets, interviewed with the University of Alabama at Birmingham to become their next head coach, as relayed to us by Terry himself through Mark Berman of Fox 26 in Houston:
Terry said the interview took place on Thursday in Houston, site of the 2016 Final Four at NRG Stadium.
However, Terry said in his text message that he has not made the decision to retire when the season is over.
“No, I’m focused on the playoffs, and there has been no offer made, but I have to keep all my options open when it comes to my post-playing career,” Terry said.
This is pretty unusual. But Terry is 38 years old and playing through his 17th NBA season. While he receives semi-consistent playing time from the Rockets, the team has regressed considerably, falling completely out of title contention as it scraps and claws for its postseason life.
Terry’s contract is up at the end of this year, which could make for a clean getaway. And though he hasn’t made any decisions about retiring, landing the UAB job could be the push he needs to walk away from the NBA, irrespective of how the Rockets end their season.
