Michael Jordan Is Considering Changing Bobcats Team Name

As the NBA’s newest majority owner, one of Michael Jordan’s first objectives with the Charlotte Bobcats could be changing the team name. While his new team is fresh off a first round playoff loss at the hands of the Orlando Magic, MJ surely has a lot on his plate in his newest venture, as the first former player to become an owner of a franchise.

Although the Bobcats as a franchise have to be elated at the fact that they have made their first playoff appearance in 8 years, Jordan must face the hard reality that the club has a lot of problems. They are locked in on a very good, but not great core of players for at least another 3 seasons, their coach, Larry Brown, albeit a legendary coach, has a wondering eye when it comes to coaching gigs and has already been linked to making a return trip as coach of the Philadelphia Sixers, and the franchise as a whole is losing money.

Upon news that Jordan had decided to take over the franchise, everyone’s thought was how long could the game’s greatest player and most intense competitors play the role as a good owner sitting on the sidelines and making moves behind the scenes? During their playoff series with the Magic, Jordan could be seen sitting courtside with his team, even getting involved by helping coach Larry Brown by criticizing officials. With the Bobcats’ season over, one way Jordan is thinking of putting his own personal stamp on the team is the rumor that he is actually considering changing their team name away from the “Bobcat” moniker, given to the team by original owner Bob Johnson.

When asked about the change during a recent press conference he replied:

“The thing is that I’m open for anything. It’s a commitment. We have to go through the league. It’s a process. It’s a financial commitment. Am I willing to look at that and say can we go down that road? Yeah. If I get the understanding from the community, from the public, that we need it and it signifies change, yeah, I would do that. But once again, it’s a process. It’s a $3-million to $10-million investment to do that. I’m not afraid of that, as long as at the backside of that, the public is going to be happy about that, that it’s going to be great for the organization. I think it [could be] a new beginning. Yeah, I would do that. I would consider that.”

Jordan’s statements sounds like a change is coming as part of a new beginning with the franchise. The local papers in Charlotte have been running wild with the possibilities and are running poll after poll, asking readers for their input on a new team name. Not surprisingly, only 25% of those that responded wanted to keep the name Bobcats, with 75% in favor of a change. Some top choices thrown out there by some readers for the new team name were the Flight, Airmen, and my personal favorite, the Jordan-aires.

From a marketing standpoint, a new name may make sense financially in terms of initial t-shirt and jersey sales, but with so many pressing issues on the franchise, changing the team name is an added expense and a priority that MJ should choose to wait on.

What would your suggestion be for a new Charlotte team name?

Larry Brown has a wondering eye? WTF does that mean? I’ve heard of a person having a wandering eye, but never a wondering eye. Oh and thanks for writing about something that MAY or MAY NOT happen. What’s next? An ongoing piece on 2012 and the Mayan calendar? Great reporting guys. Reporting on speculation. Fantastic.

Charlotte Airmen has a nice ring to it. In addition to a name change they should also sign a big ticket FA this summer.

  • Joe

Ed has it right. A three-way nickname swap would be great. Charlotte Hornets, New Orleans Jazz, Utah Bobcats.

  • PragmaticStatistic

As an Orlando Magic fan, the least I can do after the Bobcat defeat in game one is to help them with a new name.

    The Charlotte Rays
    The Charlotte Rheas
    The Charlotte Hoop
    The Charlotte Jamb
    The Charlotte Shooters
    The Charlotte Shark
    The Charlotte Sharpshooters
    The Charlotte Chill
    The Charlotte Crush
    The Charlotte Liberators

Would be good if Hornets & Jazz got their names back, but I don’t see it ever happening.

Not sure what I’d like to see as their name, but I don’t especially love Bobcats. Flight would be okay, but is a bit cheesy now that MJ is in charge – no better than ‘Bobcats’ in that regard.

I think a colour change is the most important thing. Enough of the Blue & Orange already.

  • Rm

Charlotte Jumpmen, use the Jumpman logo, maybe Carolina blue instead of red.

I’m sure Jordan could make this happen. Apparel sales would go crazy.

I see him calling them the Charlotte Buccaneers, after his high school: The Laney Buccaneers. He’s nostalgic for things like that. :)

He also might name the team after something connected with his deceased father.

He could name it the Charlotte Deans, after Dean Smith. Yep, even that is possible.

Another possibility is the Charlotte Tar Heels. Yep.

Or he could let the fans have a poll, and then give them a few choices, all of which would be terrible ones, which is how the minor league baseball team in Virginia, the Richmond Flying Squirrels, wound up with a name that no one likes!

My prediction: he’s going to call them the Charlotte Buccaneers!

    WELL GUYS,

WHATEVER DECISION IS MADE – THE NAME HAS TO BE “CATCHIE”.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MARKETING, BABY.

BOBCATS DOESN’T REALLY SPEAK MUCH FOR ITSELF. NOT AT ALL!!
AND SO HAVING SAID THAT, THE SOONER THE CHANGE THE BETTER FOR ALL.

I think the name of the team should be 1.Charlotte Martians
    2.Charlotte Beasts
    or ……………
    3.Charlotte Airjordans

  • http://www.nba.com The Black Mamba JR.

Well, I think the name of the charlotte bobcats should be changed to the amazing ” Charlotte Airjordans” and the jersey collors should be orange, blue, black(little bit), and white (worn on homecourt) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess violet or blue would be great, instead of red, for the logo.

LOL. I don’t blame Jordan one bit.. Bobcats doesn’t sound like a professional sports team at all. It’s just another generic sports team name typically used by high schools.

      @Zach, you sucks

  • Michael P.

Charlotte is best to adopt a team name that is closely connected to the game of basketball. For example- Swishmen, Dunkers, Players.

  • http://thehoopdoctors.com/online2/2010/05/michael-jordan-is-considering-changing-bobcats-team-name/ D’Mario H.

Carolina Flights. Should be the name because Jordan can support them Jordans to wear on their feet and have a Jordan symbol in the middle of the court.

  • Jake

What if New Orleans is sold to Seattle, they still have the rights to the name and colors of the Sonics, therefore it would go back to the Seattle Supersonics and we can go from Charlotte Bobcats to…… THE CHARLOTTE HORNETS!!! Get our old colors back too, I would worship Jordan if he did this..

Congradulations to MICHAEL JORDAN as a MAJORITY OWNER in the CHARLOTTE BOBCATS…….
Mr. Jordan idea to change the name to …………@#$%^&*!()……….is yet to be

Hornets all the way. People liked the Charlotte Hornets.

    Financially it would work because:
    * With MJ owning and Ewing being assistant head coach, it not only speaks to the older generation of NBA fans who grew up on Jordan, Ewing, Mourning, Johnson, Mugsy, etc, but it also gives the newer fans a chance to cheer for that same team in a new light.
    * The Bobcats may have reservations with the coaching staff and core of the team for the next 3 years but this team needs support and motivation the bobcats don’t get.
    * Also, I just wanna own a Charlotte Hornets jersey from this decade.
