When did the Mohawk Become Cool in the NBA?

Can someone tell me when the Mohawk became cool in the NBA among basketball players? Hell, can someone tell me where and when it was EVER cool? I’m not sure if I started thinking about it recently watching Von Wafer of the Houston Rockets play, or maybe it was the recent news that Mr. T was called for jury duty this week. But regardless, as soon as I started watching tonight’s Game 6 of the Boston Celtics vs. Chicago Bulls series and saw how much Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis’ mohawk is growing in I knew I had to ask you guys the question. Am I now the old guy that can’t understand ‘these crazy kids’? Or are all of y’all as puzzled as I am with the latest trend? Here are some recent examples from the past few seasons to make your judgement call:

Depends on the wearer I think… the examples above are pretty weak especially since many of them haven’t kept the sides clean and have opted for the thick strip. Done right it could be ok.

Thus, may of its proponents tend to be athletes, actors, and musicians. Check out, for instance, this 2009 post on the prevalence of mohawks in the NBA from The Hoop Doctors. [...]
