China Building Stephon Marbury Statue

Since Stephon Marbury first signed to play professional basketball in China just over two years ago we have been updating you on his antics and accolades. This season Marbury showed he was fully adjusted to the different style of play and dominated all year long. He had big scoring outbursts like this 45 point monster on JR Smith’s Zhejiang team in league play, but he also came up big when it counts as he led his Beijing Jinyu Ducks to the championship, scoring over 40 points in the final game.

Although he was clearly the most valuable player, Marbury is ineligible to win the award since he is not a local. Fans were not satisfied with that result and started a petition to build Marbury a statue of him holding the championship trophy (photos after the jump).

Hoopshype.com had these quotes from Hupu.com:

A few hours after the buzzer sounded, a “Build Marbury a Statue” campaign was launched at HoopCHINA.com, the largest sports website in China. Uneased by the Final MVP situation, fans started talking about giving Marbury a prize he deserves. In less than a week, 1.02 million fans at HoopCHINA have voted for the idea of building Marbury a life-size bronze statue. It was also decided by voters that the statue should capture the moment he grabbed the CBA championship trophy.
