This season, the NBA has announced refereeing errors more than any other time in recent memory. After a controversial no-call, there’s usually an announcement the following day admitting the blown call.
That’s both good and bad. Good in that the league is owning up to it, but bad because it causes everyone to get more upset. The fans feel vindicated but slighted since they will never replay the game or change the outcome. The refs feel they are being thrown under the bus by the league, and that by making them nervous about future close calls might perpetuate the problem not resolve it. Could it be that the product as a whole suffers? If so, it’s a lose-lose situation.
But Mark Cuban is fine with it. In fact, he wants to see it more…
“I love the transparency,” Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said before Monday’s home game against Orlando. “Now if I can just get them to do the same level of transparency for the other 47 minutes, 55 seconds, we’ll really be making progress.”
Does Cuban mean that the NBA should admit to all referee calls missed during every game? Is that realistic?
“Yeah it is,” Cuban said. “Because if you’re evaluating and you’re being held accountable and you’re proud of the work you do, why wouldn’t you?”
