J.R. Smith, Cavs at Odds Over Length of Contract

J.R. Smith

Similar to last season, J.R. Smith is looking for an NBA deal well into the Summer. At the conclusion of the 2014-14 season, he opted out of the deal with the Cavs; a move that ultimately cost him about $5 million. He opted out during the 2016 playoffs with the Cavs again, but that was in his best financial interest.

He’s intent on returning to Cleveland, as he’s not meeting with any other teams. But it appears he and the Cavs are at a stalemate over the number of years.

While neither Smith nor (his agent Rich) Paul has ever confirmed this figure, it is believed he’s looking for a contract worth about $15 million annually. The two sides may not be arguing over money so much as the length of the deal — the Cavs would likely prefer a shorter contract.
