Warriors Coach Steve Kerr ‘Happy’ Stephen Curry Threw His Mouthpiece in Game 6 Loss to Cavs

Hopefully Steve Kerr has his checkbook handy. His comments following the Golden State Warriors’ 115-101 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 6 of the NBA Finals are going to cost him.

Kerr was not shy about criticizing the referees for how they officiated Stephen Curry. The two-time MVP fouled out with the game already decided, then proceeded to get tossed after throwing his mouthpiece into the stands and screaming at the ref.

To answer your question, yes, the incident did look as surreal as it sounds:

In all fairness to Curry, the game was poorly officiated from start to finish, and his final two fouls were absolute crap. Hence why Kerr was happy—yes, happy—that his point guard erupted near the end of the game, per Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wetzel:

Some will interpret this as Kerr, and the Warriors, making excuses. But that’s not what happened here. Neither Kerr nor his troops attempted to blame the officiating for their Game 6 letdown. Kerr made it a point to say above that’s not why they lost.

The first quarter, during which the Warriors scored 11 points, is why they lost. And while Steph definitely overreacted to his sixth foul, his outburst is not further evidence of the Warriors’ sense of his entitlement. He battled mostly illegitimate foul trouble all night and was just pissed. That happens.

Plus, he apologized to the fan he hit with his mouthpiece. That counts for something.
