Mike D’Antoni has held head coaching positions in the two largest media markets in the NBA: New York and Los Angeles for both the Knicks and Lakers. He also quit both jobs when times got tough. Truthfully speaking, he hasn’t done a whole lot since his days in Phoenix and that seems like a lifetime ago. Despite all of that he has constantly be rumored to be sought for other gigs.
He’s now in Philly as an associate head coach, but may be promoted to head coach eventually. Given the cards he was dealt, Sixers head coach Brett Brown didn’t produce many wins this season. But, what was the expectation? He may be relieved of his duties in order to give D’Antoni a try. Not sure why anyone would think D’Antoni would have better luck, but this may be what ultimately happens.
If D’Antoni, the Sixers’ associate head coach, gets offers elsewhere — besides Brooklyn, he could be a fit in Washington or Phoenix — then Colangelo may be tempted to let Brown go and bump D’Antoni up to head coach in order to keep him, sources say. Ownership may have other ideas, remaining firmly supportive of Brown.
