Remember when Carmelo Anthony wasn’t all about Kristaps Porzingis?
I don’t either.
That might be because Anthony was never down on him, or it could be because Porzingis won over his superstar teammate by telling him about the cornrows he used to have.
Either way, Porzingis used to have cornrows, and he told Anthony about them, and Melo was left smitten.
This anecdote comes from Lee Jenkins’ piece for Sports Illustrated. The entire thing is worth a read, as it provides insight into Porzingis, the genuine human being and basketball psychopath, but it’s the cornrows tidbit that is gaining traction around the NBA universe:
One summer day Anthony and Porzingis worked out together, then sat on the basket stanchion and talked. “Can you show me that move you just did?” Porzingis asked. Anthony was impressed. In the fall Anthony and Porzingis chatted again, and Porzingis told him about the cornrows. “After that I was like, ‘All right, O.K., I’m riding with you from now on,’” Anthony laughs. “The kid has an aura about him.”
The biggest takeaway from all this?
Porzingis is a gotdamn charmer.
Well that, and it doesn’t take much for Melo to ride or die with you or whatever.
