Carmelo Anthony Should Take it Easy

melorest4If the New York Knicks couldn’t get any worse…… Not only are the Knickerbockers the NBA’s third-worst team (4-20) at the moment; They’re also off to the worst start in franchise history, riding a 10-game losing streak, only have three players averaging double figures, and are surrendering close to 100 points per game.

The Knicks are also near the bottom of the league in scoring (93.7 points per game, ranked 26th) and rebounding (39.1 boards per game, ranked 29th). The rebuilding process in Manhattan has been more painful than originally anticipated.

Making matters worse is the news that forward Carmelo Anthony, the team’s leading scorer (22.9 PPG), may need surgery to relieve is ailing left knee. This is obviously a huge blow to an already decimated team.

Despite the team’s misery on the court, Anthony is one of the few bright spots. His offensive consistency is really the only reason to watch a Knicks game these days. And even through the hard times, fans are still grateful that ‘Melo chose to stay in New York instead of taking greener pastures in free agency.

The franchise rewarded Anthony for his loyalty back in July with a contract worth well over $100-million. Considering the Knicks have not gotten any better, that loyalty has been tested time and again.

But if Carmelo does indeed need surgery, the team will need to move on without him. Yes he’s their best offensive player, and yes they’ll more than likely count the days until he returns. But in all honesty, the Knicks should leave Carmelo be and let him rest.

The Knicks aren’t playing for anything other than a high draft pick this year. Plus, team president Phil Jackson has stated time and again that he’s building for future, not the present. The team anxiously awaits next year’s free agent class -which may include Kevin Durant- which could provide the Knicks with a player to compliment Anthony.

Combine that with all of the money invested in Anthony, it would be reckless and dangerous to rush him back. So until he is completely recovered and healed, the Knicks should learn how to ride the pine without him. Follow me on Twitter @GabeSalgado82
