With so much attention around the Knicks, Lakers and Warriors coaching vacancies, we forget about Detroit. All told, it’s not a terrible situation given some of the potential on the roster.
According to Yahoo!, the Pistons are making a pretty aggressive run at Stan Van Gundy. Realizing that Golden State is also interested in Van Gundy, Detroit is throwing the kitchen sink at him. They are reportedly set to offer him the head coaching gig and complete control of basketball operations. That will be tough for anyone to turn down.
The Detroit Pistons are pursuing Stan Van Gundy with a lucrative offer to assume complete control of basketball operations and coach, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The Pistons are trying to compete with the Golden State Warriors, who are aggressively pursuing Van Gundy for their coaching position.
While Golden State holds several advantages over the Pistons – including the roster and preferred geography – the opportunity to run his own franchise is intriguing to Van Gundy, sources said.
Van Gundy talked with Golden State officials in recent days and left impressed with the management structure and ownership, sources told Yahoo Sports.
Still, Golden State isn’t willing to make an allowance for Van Gundy to have final say on player personnel. The Warriors are willing to make him one of the higher paid coaches in the NBA, but Detroit owner Tom Gores is willing to do “whatever it takes,” one source says, to recruit Van Gundy.
