There’s no denying that the Villanova Wildcats have been one of the surprise teams in NCAA this season.
Head coach Jay Wright arguably did one of his most remarkable coaching jobs on his 13 seasons at Nova finishing with a near perfect 28-3 regular season record, including an outright Big East regular season crown, and finishing ranked #3 in the country.
Their only losses were to ACC power Syracuse, and two blowout losses to new Big East rival Creighton, who by the way, feature the nation’s best player Doug McDermott, one of the top 10 scorers all time in NCAA history.
Led by a deep collection of an athletic mix of upperclassmen(Darrun Hilliard, Jayvaughn Pinkston, James Bell), stud sophomores(Daniel Ochefu and Ryan Arcidiacano), and freshmen(Jason Hart and Kris Jenkins), this season’s Wildcats were the clear cut class of the new Big East this season and deservedly so, earned the #1 seed and a 1st round bye in the 2014 Big East Tourney.
With teams like Marquette and Georgetown having subpar seasons, many expected a 3rd meeting between Nova and Creighton in the Big East Finals this weekend, but that’s why this time of year is appropriately called “March Madness.”
In undoubtedly the upset of the postseason so far, Seton Hall, a 17-16 squad that was the #8 seeded team heading into Madison Square Garden, upset Villanova 64-63 in the Quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament, potentially hurting Nova’s chances at securing a #1 seed in the Big Dance.
According to ESPN’s Bracketology, Villanova still retains a top seed despite the loss, but other teams like Kansas and Michigan, who are current #2 seeds that still have a chance at sweeping both their regular season and conference tourneys are still playing and could push Nova to the 2 line come the NCAA Tournament.
Villanova’s shot at a #1 seed may have disappeared because of this Sterling Gibbs buzzer beater as time expired…..
