Carmelo Anthony got wind of the fact that Trayvon Martin’s family was going to be in town this weekend to do a national television interview after the arrest of George Zimmerman. He had been thinking about Trayvon’s brothers since Trayvon was killed, as ‘Melo lost his sister last year and felt like he knew what they might be going through. With that in mind, Anthony reached out to the Martin family and invited them not only to the Knicks game against the Wizards on Friday night, but also into the Knicks locker room before the game (photos after the jump).
Carmelo didn’t want this to turn into a publicity stunt so when he brought the family into the locker room he made sure the media wasn’t in the room. There were a couple family members with cameras, but for the most part it was just an emotional heart to heart between Carmelo Anthony, and his New York Knicks’ teammates.
‘Melo told the NY Daily News:
“We all know the tragedy that happened, and just to get in a different space of mind right now, just bringing them to not even the game, but to the locker room in the back; meeting all the players, meeting the coaches. That was the easy part. We had no media there. It was just something that I wanted to do.”
The Martin’s had a very emotional week as their son/brother (Trayvon’s) killer, George Zimmerman, was charged this past Wednesday with second-degree murder. Zimmerman’s arraignment is set for May 29, and lots of people across the country and waiting anxiously to see if he will be convicted. If convicted, he could face a sentence of up to 25 years to life.
