Jeremy Lin has had as good of a five game stretch as Knicks fans could possibly ask for. But the big question remains, “Is Linsanity here to stay?”, or will his play and the teams success subside. For those Knicks fans that are superstitious about the curse of being placed on the cover of Sports Illustrated, the timing of Lin’s accolade couldn’t be any worse.
Today it was announced that Sports Illustrated will be placing Lin on the cover of this week’s issue. The cover story will be headlined as “Against All Odds”. Although Sports Illustrated staff will admit to knowledge of the ‘cover curse’ they felt that Lin has risen to fame and become America’s sweetheart too fast to ignore him for this week’s cover.
Terry McDonell, editor of the Sports Illustrated Group, said he had no qualms about putting Lin — who in five games has gone from benchwarmer to breakout star — on the cover.
“Jeremy Lin has done more in these past five games to captivate a fan base than any player in NBA history – and not just with his historic statistics,” he said. “Look at what’s going on in this city.”
Sporting goods stores are having trouble keeping Lin’s No. 17 jerseys in stock. And Lin-sanity has suddenly become part of the city’s sports vocabulary. (via)
