Yao Ming just never ceases to amaze. Many retired NBA stars just kick up their feet and live life on easy street after their playing days are over. Since his retirement, Yao has started a wine business, bought a Chinese basketball team, gone back to university, and now….entered the world of politics.
Photos in official media on Monday showed Yao at the weekend closing ceremony for the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Shanghai Committee.
“There are about 142 members in the group, and Yao is the youngest,” Kong Rong, who works in the service office of committee, was quoted as saying by the China Daily.
The advisory committee does not have any real power, but the newspaper said Yao is supposed to attend regular meetings, and can make suggestions for the advisory body and government departments.
Yao was quoted as saying “raising proposals is very serious business, and I do not want to be hasty.”
It is unknown right now if Yao has any long term political aspirations in China, but I can tell you this, if Yao does decide to run for office in China he would have a huge fan base. Basketball is as popular as ever in China, and Yao is sort of like a God in many of the peoples minds. He can do no wrong on the court, so why not lead a country? (/s)
