When the rosters were announced for Capital Punishment, Drew league vs. Goodman league, it sounded like the showdown of the century. Given the grim look of the NBA’s labor situation, it was built up as the game of the century. It was a bit different because there were so many big names playing in a meaningless pro-am summer league game. The game didn’t disappoint as it came down to the final possession. But that game is about to get trumped.
Tomorrow in Baltimore, the Goodman League will take on the hometown Melo League and this game boasts even more names than Capital Punishment. Key names for Goodman include Kevin Durant, John Wall, Brandon Jennings (who played for Drew League in Capital Punishment) and DeMarcus Cousins. That sounds nice and all, but key names for Melo will include LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Josh Selby, Gary Neal and Donte Green.
News of this game just surfaced recently and that’s unfortunate. We learned of Capital Punishment about a month prior to the game, and it was held on a Saturday. It was given heavyweight bout treatment. Well, tomorrow’s game blows Capital Punishment out of the water and it will take place on a Tuesday and came together very quickly. Strange. Perhaps there’s a very good reason for that. Either way, this should be a game and a half and it’s great that these players are continuing to give fans something to watch and talk about. My prediction is that Melo league pulls this one out.
