The Minnesota Timberwolves have a completely new look and feel as a franchise, and with the acquisition of Jimmy Butler this off-season they are projected to make their first postseason since Kevin Garnett left town in 2004.
Stocking their roster with veterans and winners to surround their young duo of Karl Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins has been their strategy this summer and there might be one more piece that can give them more toughness and help Andrew Wiggins become a better defender: Tony Allen.
Allen is 35 and not the athlete he was in his prime, but he still is coming off of one of his better seasons numbers wise (still can’t shoot though) and has such awareness and dogged determination on the defensive end that he can still be an asset for an NBA team trying to win games, albeit in a more limited role.
While the Wolves are still apparently also talking to Dante Cunningham and considering bringing back Shabazz Muhammad, Allen is by far the best choice in my opinion and will bring some much needed grit to the second unit for one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA in 2016-17.
Minnesota can only offer the veteran’s minimum at this point, but that is essentially all that Tony Allen is going to get in the open market.
If Minnesota doesn’t sign Allen, the Cleveland Cavaliers should come knocking.
