With knee surgery putting All-Star point guard John Wall on the shelf for the next month to month and a half, the Wizards are in dire need of some depth at the point guard position.
Apparently they may be setting their sights on a guy who has been playing in China and is a former starting point guard for the Denver Nuggets: Ty Lawson.
Here is what Adrian Wojnarowksi reported:
“After a season in the China Basketball Association, guard Ty Lawson has emerged as a serious candidate for a deal with the Washington Wizards, league sources told ESPN….
Nevertheless, Lawson’s strong performance with Shangdong of the CBA, including 55 points in his final game, has merited deeper inspection, league sources said. Lawson is expected to get the opportunity prior to the All-Star break to make a case to Washington about signing him, league sources said.”
If you haven’t noticed, China is a magical place for guys who can’t get an NBA job and can handle the ball and score, it is an opportunity for them to put up some eye-popping numbers and pique the interest of NBA teams again (MarShon Brooks, Jimmer Fredette).
Lawson is a better potential option for the Wizards than Rose in my opinion as he is a better table-setter and catch-and-shoot guy. He is also healthy and producing somewhere, albeit in China.
He wasn’t bad last season for the Sacramento Kings, averaging 9.9 points and 4.8 assists per game and he still is in what should be his prime at the age of 30.
Hopefully the Wizards give Lawson a chance to rehab his NBA image (probably not the best choice of word) and play meaningful NBA basketball again.
