Among the many surprises and disappointments of this NBA season, the Washington Wizards have to be near the top of the list. Last season, the John Wall-led Wizards hosted a first round series versus the Raptors and had a decent run in the second round. Many thought they would be able to build on that this season, but it was anything but.
They stumbled out of the gate and were never able to return. They lost the veteran leadership of of Paul Pierce and had nine guys on the roster playing on one year deals. According to John Wall, that latter is what played a role in a “wasted season.” This all, of course, precedes the likely firing of head coach Randy Wittman.
Among the various reasons that Washington Wizards point guard John Wall figures this was what he called “a wasted season” with no playoff appearance was that having nine players on expiring contracts led to a contentious atmosphere.
“It was tough,” Wall said Wednesday night, when he sat out Washington’s final game because of swelling in his right knee, “because at times when you have nine guys on one-year deals, everybody wanted the last word, every wanted the last say-so.”
