Courtney Lee seems like a good guy—insofar as supplying much of the Memphis Grizzlies organization with Chipotle makes you a good guy.
From Ronald Tillery of the Commercial Appeal:
There’s at least one thing Courtney Lee loves more than making a 3-point shot.
Chipotle.
So it should come as no surprise that the shooting guard shared his passion for the Mexican restaurant with Grizzlies and FedExForum employees today by providing everyone with a free lunch from Chipotle.
The Grizzlies just wrapped up a six-game homestand by going 5-1, and Lee said being at home for two straight weeks was a reminder of how many people it takes to make an NBA game happen. The Griz and FedExForum employ approximately 130 people.
“Some of those faces are unfamiliar and you don’t get a chance to see them but you definitely reap the benefits of what they do every day,” Lee said. “I just wanted to show them that we appreciate them. It’s not a gesture just from myself but it’s from my teammates also. I got their opinions on what to do so it’s from all of us.”
This is pretty awesome.
I love stories like this. They highlight the softer, humane side of sports. We often forget about everyone behind the scenes who works tirelessly to make the daily miracle that is the game of basketball happen.
This is a game. It is not life or death. The players are celebrities, but they are also people. There are bigger things than putting the round brown-orange thingamabob through the round red thingamajig—such as the people who aid in making this game so lucrative.
Lee understands that, it seems, which I respect.
I also respect what he said in reference to how he decided what to serve at this lunch shindig, per Tillery:
“Chipotle is life.”
