In what is turning out to be one of the sadder tales of post-NBA life for an NBA Hall of Famer, Dennis Rodman this week has been declared ‘Broke’ and ‘Extremely Sick’ by his lawyers. Rodman is currently in court defending himself for failure to make child support and alimony payments. And the sum he owes is no small matter. As of the beginning of March the running total is over $800,000 in back child support.
Dennis Rodman’s attorney, Linnea Willis, said in court documents that the former Laker is barely capable of paying for his living expenses, let alone the $5,000 he has for one child from another relationship, and the $4,500 monthly payment for spousal and child support to Michelle Rodman.
The attorneys who have represented him to date have worked pro bono, Willis said.
“Respondent Dennis Rodman is broke and cannot afford any additional fees,” according to court documents filed on his behalf.
He is “extremely sick” and his marketability is diminishing with age and illness, according to court documents.
At this point we probably shouldn’t jump to conclusions about Rodman being broke. Lawyers in cases like these tend to do and say whatever they can to defend their clients. With that said, rumors about Rodman’s financial and physical health have been swirling for quite some time.
Dennis Rodman was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame last summer, and is widely regarded as the greatest rebounder to ever play the game. We hope Rodman can get his partying and health under control, as for the finances, he may just have to live with the choices he has made since his retirement from the NBA.
