One would think that future NBA Hall of Famer Allen Iverson would just be happy to possibly have a job, but several sources in Europe are reporting that the 11 time All Star would have already been signed to a multi-year deal to play for Beskitas Cola Turka in Turkey, if it were not for a long list of demands.
After leaving the Philadelphia 76ers halfway through the ‘09-’10 season because of an undisclosed serious illness to his young daughter, Iverson was hoping to re-appear on an NBA roster this upcoming season. But with very little to no interest from NBA clubs, the former ‘01 NBA MVP chose to look overseas for a guaranteed contract to play for next season.
Since Iverson averaged 13.8 ppg and 4 assists in 25 games with the Sixers last season, many experts put him on a number of top free agent lists this Summer to no avail, as most NBA GM’s may have finally grown tired of A.I’s off the court issues and temper tantrums with coaches.
Iverson reportedly was a model citizen in Philly last season until his forced departure from the team for personal reasons. The move away from the club was a bit of a surprise amidst rumors of Allen in serious financial trouble because of gambling debts and a messy divorce.
Without a doubt, playing overseas could turn out to be a good career move for Allen, as a number of former NBA players have had success like most recently the 33 year old Stephon Marbury, who won the MVP in the Chinese league last season. Iverson remains a popular player world-wide as he would undoubtedly help boost Turkish league attendance numbers.
The Turkish club has reportedly already agreed to A.I.’s demands of a luxury car, an extravagant villa, and to be paid every week instead of getting the customary monthly check, but negotiations have hit a standstill with Iverson unwilling to agree to allow the club permission to fine him any more than 1% of his earnings for any indiscretions. It sounds like the now 35 year old Iverson isn’t sure he will behave himself in a new environment.
The terms of the proposed deal state that Iverson would earn anywhere between $1.5-$2 million, including bonuses, and a percentage of advertising revenue. Considering his non-existent other options, it may finally be time for one of the greatest players of this generation to grow up.
Take the deal!
