Are the Clippers a Bigger Draw Than the Lakers This Year?

January 18, 2011 – Kevin Burke

The Los Angeles Lakers are the 2-time defending NBA Champions and have a legit shot at earning their second 3-peat in recent memory. They have the most skilled player in the league in Kobe Bryant, and probably the most offensively gifted big man in Pau Gasol. They are coached by the man with more rings than Liz Taylor and have the tradition, glitz and glamour that come along with the franchise.

They happen to share the Staples Center with with the Clippers. The Clippers have historically been the doormat of the NBA and the team that no one wants to play for. They routinely hold a draft pick in the Lottery because they traditionally have a putrid season. They have made the playoffs twice since Blake Griffin has been alive and are arguably one of the worst franchises in sports. But is all of this in the process of changing?

This just in: the Clippers are a fun and exciting team to watch. At 15 – 25, they probably won’t make the playoffs this year but they have one of the best young cores in the league. On their 15 man roster, only four guys are in their 30′s with Jarron Collins (age 32) being the oldest. That youth has translated into them becoming a major draw in the Association.

Obviously, the reason that they have become such a draw is because of Blake Griffin. This man is an absolute animal. The 21-year old rookie is practically averaging 22 and 13 this year and definitely has All-Star numbers. Just mid-way through his first season, he is probably the most exciting player in the NBA. His play alone has made the Clipps relevant. He has also helped to resurrect the career of Baron Davis who is beginning to look like his old self now that he is throwing no-look lobs to Blake. Griffin just dropped 47 on the Pacers as part of his 27th consecutive double-double and will participate in the dunk contest next month.

But it’s not just Blake and Baron. Eric Gordon is probably the most improved player in the league, quietly averaging 24 a night. And don’t forget about DeAndre Jordan, Randy Foye and rookies Eric Bledsoe and Al-Farouq Aminu either. This team is set up nicely for the future.

The Clippers definitely aren’t a better team than the Lakers, although Blake and company just beat them the other night. Staples still belongs to the Lakers, but they have certainly underachieved this year. They have suffered some bad losses this year which has many people scratching their heads. Their somewhat lackluster play has allowed the Clippers to steal some of their shine out there in Hollywood.

If you were to ask me today, I’d say that the upstart Clippers are more exciting to watch than the Lakers. Not last year. Not tomorrow. Today. They Lakers are built for the playoffs and usually turn it on then. They appear to be cruising through the season while the young Clippers play a refreshing brand of ball. I’m willing to bet that I’m not the only one who is more interested in a Clippers SportsCenter highlight than one featuring the Lakers.

    Blake Griffin instantly became my favorite player to watch in the NBA after he scored his first career basket in the season opener off that lob pass from Randy Foye. That kid is special.

      @Prince James,

      Yeah he is. And he’s more than just a dunker too.

        @Kevin Burke,

        Yeah, i’d agree that 47 points in a game for a rook would warrant the praise of being more than a dunker….

    First of all,this balke you see is not going to last because he’s going to hurt hiself runnuing around like Kobe use to do before he matured.He’s to big and all big dudes that do what he’s doing mess themselves up!!!I beyt you one thing when his contracts up the Clippers aren’t going to have enough money to keep him aaaaaaaaand he might just retire as a Laker!!!Its just Like Kobe fresh in the league,he shoots a lot and will not be able to transition into more of a Ball Player instead of a Ball Hog!!!

    I live in Austin, TX and I have to watch the Lakers late at night on NBA Pay to View where we listen to the home team announcers. Most of them are pretty good at pretending to be neutral, but I hate watching the Lakers when they play the Clippers, it is like This kid, whathisname, oh, yeah, Blake Griffin, is like a basketball God! I mean, okay, he is good, and the Clippers, God Bless them, but come on, he can’t tie Kobe’s shoelaces.

      @Chuck Menzies,

      The article doesn’t compare Kobe to Blake. It just states that Blake has made the Clippers very exciting to watch. In fact, the second sentence states that Kobe is the most skilled player in the league. Thanks for commenting

    you guys are to much!! you know blake griffin have nothing to show for Kobe Bryant,
    he’s a dunker alright, but remember he got injured for being a dunker with his knee’s, he better take care of that knees, before his knees take care of his career in NBA, just like Greg Ogden.
    clippers are just to much hype right now, but at the end they can’t finish, what’s up with that?
    clippers equal to the warriors right now, same guys in different team one special person that’s it.

      @danny,

      The article doesn’t compare Kobe and Blake. Nor does it say that the Clippers are a good time. I pointed out that they were 15-25 at the time this was written so I’m acknowledging they aren’t a good team. I just says that they’re very exciting.

  • Bigger tahn the Lakers? Lets be real now!!!

    I laughed my ass off when i heard mublings on here that the Clippers had replaced the Lakers as the main attraction in LA. Yeah right!!! The Clippers don’t even have a winning record. They’d have to dominate the league for the next 40 or so years (whilst we completely suck) for them to even come close to being as popular or considered the main attraction. The Lakers ARE Los Angeles.We’ve been the toast of all the sports teams in LA for decades.Most people here in LA are born into Laker loving families. How the hell can the Clippers compare? Give me a break!!!

    The Clippers are having there little fun but after a few years of getting smashed in the playoffs, Blake Giffin will want out and the Clippers will fade back into the darkness from whence they came.

      @Bigger tahn the Lakers? Lets be real now!!!,

      Yes, I pointed out that they dont have a winning record. And I’m not talking about which team has the richer tradition. I thought I made that clear in the article. I’m simply talking about today. You’re right, Blake may leave in a few years and they’ll go back to irrelevancy. That’s why the whole argument is centered around today. Thanks for reading and commenting.
