The Suns are winners of three of their last four games, despite being without their best player, Devin Booker (seriously, look at their roster, it is not pretty).
One of the major reasons for the recent burst of success has been the addition of Isaiah Canaan.
Canaan was signed with the hardship exception for the Suns with injuries to Brandon Knight, Alan Williams and Devin Booker, and in four games is averaging 13.0 points, 5.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals on 43% shooting from three.
He has provided a spark for a team that has easily had the worst point guard play in the league since moving on from Eric Bledsoe and he is making a very young and inexperienced Suns team look frisky (along with Alex Len and Troy Daniels).
The problem is Canaan will have to be released when Booker returns (which projects to be soon) unless the Suns trade or release another player, which seems likely according to Suns General Manager Ryan McDonough:
“I think Isaiah has certainly played well enough to find a home and be a guy we want to keep.
I think with what Isaiah’s done, we should plan on having him in Phoenix for the rest of the year, if not longer.”
It feels like the Suns would either deal Tyson Chandler or Greg Monroe if they can receive any value and not take on any long-term money or buy out the remainder of Monroe’s contract which expires at the end of the season.
The Suns have struggled to amass a lot of talent on their roster at this point, but they clearly excel at finding under the radar talent for depth with players like Canaan, Troy Daniels and Mike James.
