NBA to Place G-League Team in Mexico City

G-league

The NBA’s push to become a more global product continues as some big news broke on the day that the 2017 Mexico games began with the match-up of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Brooklyn Nets.

There will be an NBA G-League team in Mexico City.

Here is a quote from Marc Stein of the New York Times:

“MEXICO CITY — The National Basketball Association intends to put an N.B.A. G League franchise here in the Mexican capital, according to three people familiar with the league’s plans.

A team in the G League, N.B.A.’s official minor league, which would be owned and operated locally, could begin play as early as next season, according to the people, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the subject publicly.”

It is still undecided whether this team will be affiliated with an NBA team, as currently the only two NBA teams without a G-League team are the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trailblazers.

The NBA may decide to not affiliate this with any team at all and use it as a place for young developing talent to have a chance to play against other NBA minor league players and gather the attention of NBA scouts.

Either way it is another creative idea by the NBA to increase the reach of the ever-growing league.
