Cavs-Celtics Appear Close to Finalizing Deal, Additional Pick May Be Involved

The past week has been about as juicy and newsworthy as it gets for the NBA in late August. After the earth-shattering, blockbuster trade between the Cavaliers and Celtics last week was agreed to that would send Irving to the Celtics in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Brooklyn’s 2018 1st Round Pick and Ante Zizic, concerns over the severity of Thomas’s hip injury lead to the trade being in doubt and the Cavaliers asking for more to complete the deal.

Well after the all-important physical and no real evidence of the issue being more severe than originally thought, the Cavaliers have backed off of their demands for an another valuable draft pick or Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown, mostly…

Here is the most recent update from Adrian Wojnarowski:

“Cleveland and Boston officials started to engage each other on a solution on Tuesday, league sources told ESPN. Cleveland is no longer seeking one of the Celtics’ top young players or significant draft picks, league sources said. The Cavaliers could be inclined to complete the deal for a late first-round pick or second-round considerations, league sources said.”

At this point regardless if the additional pick is warranted or not, why don’t the Celtics just throw in one of their lottery protected 1st round picks in the next two or three seasons and call it a day. They are getting their new star of the future in Irving, and the Cavaliers are getting a King’s ransom for him considering the situation they found themselves in this summer after his trade request.

Here’s to hoping Isaiah Thomas is fully healthy next season and we have a classic playoff match-up between these two rivals.
