The Sacramento Kings are a mess. No seriously, they are.
Sacramento’s infamous owners—the Maloof brothers—have once again dragged what’s left of the organization’s good name through mud, with the latest rumblings as to their potential relocation.
The place that’s drawing the most buzz? Virginia Beach. Again I’m serious, or rather, as least as serious as the Virginian-Pilot is.
consortium of sports and entertainment companies has approached Virginia Beach about forming a partnership to build an 18,000-seat arena near the Oceanfront and bringing a professional sports team – possibly the NBA’s Sacramento Kings – to the city.
Wow, let that sink in, or rather, let that go in one part of your brain and out the other, because it’s already been refuted, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein.
NBA’s Tim Frank on SAC relo chatter: “We have no information from the Kings on this matter and there has been no application for relocation”
These conflicting reports are so the Kings. They’ve become one of the NBA’s laughing stock staples and are living up to such a reputation here. And whether it’s the organization’s fault or not is irrelevant, because this is what we have come to expect from the Kings—getting it wrong.
From the misuse of Jimmer Fredette, to the unwarranted signing of Jason Thompson, to the latest relocation chatter, Sacramento has been a nauseating roller coaster ride over the past year. This is a team that used to be a pillar of respectability, but has now regressed into a state of complete and utter chaos.
If the Kings cannot even get their locale straight, how are should we expect them to fair on actual hardwood? Such shady dealings off the court breed distrust in the locker room and sparks poor displays on the floor. And that’s far from a winning equation.
This organization is in need of being rescued, but sadly there’s no end in sight. Not as long as the Maloofs are running the show. They’ve placed the Kings in the NBA’s basement, without a set of stairs to help them climb their way back up.
And it’s sad. You don’t want to have to deal with this kind of crap. You want to be able to focus on issues that pertain to the players and their dealings on the court, not where the court in question will be located—you know, actual basketball.
But this is where we are; another day, another rumor linking the Kings to absurdities.
I mean, will this team ever get it right?
From the looks of things, no they won’t, not anytime soon at least.
