Yesterday the New York Daily News reported that Michael Jordan was considering selling the Charlotte Bobcats if things didn’t turn around soon with their performance. Given the Bobcats have the leagues worst record at 7-43, and have been bleeding money this season, it would be conceivable that an owner could want to sell the team. But clearly the NY Daily News didn’t have their facts straight, as Michael Jordan released a statement to address the rumor:
“I was disturbed to hear the false report that I intend to sell my majority interest in the Charlotte Bobcats,” Jordan said in a statement. “I am 100 percent committed to building the Bobcats into a contender and have no plans to sell the team.”
The Bobcats are clearly in a rebuilding mode and it will likely take some time to turn them into a contender. The team traded away veteran stars Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson with the hope of rebuilding through young talent.
They’re now looking to build the franchise around lottery picks Kemba Walker and Bismack Biyombo, as well as young players such as Gerald Henderson, D.J. Augustin and Byron Mullens. [VIA]
The Bobcats are on pace to record a horrifying record this season. But if you think about the silver lining of having such a bad season, its that their odds will be excellent to land the first pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. And it just so happens that getting the top pick in this year’s draft is a game changer. Kentucky’s Anthony Davis is certainly a franchise player in the making and dominates on both ends of the floor. Think about combining Anthony Davis, with Kemba Walker and Bismack Biyombo. That would be a future nucleus and team worth holding on to Mr. Jordan.
