The ongoing saga of Allen Iverson trying to lace ’em up one more time in the NBA, just doesn’t seem to end. After failed attempts at playing pro overseas, and failed attempts to use the lockout shortened season as a point of re-entry to the NBA, Allen Iverson is taking his talents south to play in a pro league in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Former NBA star Allen Iverson is joining a regional basketball league in the Dominican Republic for a month.
Team president Milton Nunez told The Associated Press on Thursday the 36-year-old guard will play for Pueblo Nuevo. He declined to say how much Iverson will be paid.
Iverson is to arrive Sunday and play for his second-place team that same day against GUG in Santiago province, Nunez said.
“He and his agent have told us that he has been training a lot and that even if he hasn’t been playing anywhere, he has what we need to help Pueblo Nuevo,” Nunez said.[via]
We recently found out that Iverson isn’t bankrupt as previously thought. In fact he’s taken the necessary and responsible steps of forced savings through a trust that he doesn’t have access to in order to secure his finances well into the future. So with that said, why is he trying to so hard to play pretty much anywhere that someone will take him? Love for the game?
IMO, Iverson is likely hoping to make a big splash in a league somewhere, anywhere that he can get some attention for what he’s still capable of. I’m assuming he’s still hoping some team will take a chance on him for one last stint in the NBA. Here’s hoping that actually happens.
But the only puzzling thing about the Iverson situation is, ‘why not play in the NBA D-League?’ Sure it doesn’t pay that well, but if you’re looking for a re-entry point to the NBA, that’s as good a place to start as any. Just don’t take a page out of the Antoine Walker book and show up for the D-League looking out of shape and worn out.
Good luck little man. THD is backing you all the way.
