It appears as if the world is suddenly Michigan’s Trey Burke’s and we all are just in it.
It’s been a miraculous last few weeks for the University of Michigan sophomore point guard as he not only has helped his Wolverine teammates advance to Monday’s National Championship Game but was selected as this season’s Wooden Award winner, given annually to the nation’s most outstanding player.
All season long our NCAA Player of the Year Watch had fluctuated with a different leader seemingly every month but it became a 4 player race throughout the last month of the season, coming down to Burke, Creighton’s Doug McDermott, Indiana’s Victor Oladipo, and Georgetown’s Otto Porter Jr, who made a tremendous run at the end of the regular season.
But in the end, it was Burke edging out Oladipo by less than 100 points, followed by McDermott, Porter Jr, and Gonzaga’s Kelly Olynyk. Trey also edged out Oladipo for Big Ten Player of the Year honors by averaging 16.8 ppg and 6.8 assists.
Although he was somewhat held in check in Michigan’s Final Four tilt against Syracuse, Burke remains a projected Lottery pick in the 2013 NBA Draft and because of his exuberant leadership, toughness, and game-changing abilities packed into a 6 foot frame, he reminds many of Monta Ellis going forward….
