Isaiah Thomas Would Love to Re-Sign with Los Angeles Lakers ‘If Things Work Out’

Isaiah Thomas’ hardline free-agency stance appears to be softening.

First, many moons ago, he was looking for someone to back up the Brinks truck. With that type of contract all but out of the question, he then expressed his belief that he’s still a starter rather than a sixth man. From there, he suggested a return to the Boston Celtics isn’t out of the question.

Now he’s singing the praises of the Los Angeles Lakers, his current team, even if it means remaining in his backup role.

From Tania Ganguli of The Los Angeles Times:

Lakers fans were telling him they wanted him to stay a Laker next year, and he was telling them he would love that. It’s not quite that simple, of course, and there are many moving parts. And while Thomas sees himself as a starter, he told The Times he wouldn’t rule out returning to the Lakers in a role similar to what he has now, coming off the bench for significant minutes.

“I like it here, I like the situation I’m in, the system, coaching staff,” Thomas said. “Organization’s been great to me. If things work out I would love to be here. You just never know. With free agency you’ve got to keep your options open. I have no complaints since I’ve stepped foot and put a Laker uniform on.”

Talk about a timely 180.
Thomas is smart to broaden his horizons. He’s not in position to discriminate against certain teams and situations. He hasn’t rehabilitated his stock enough following a serious hip injury, and this year’s free-agency market isn’t expected to be particularly robust.
Something as ostensibly simple as finding a starting gig is likely off the table. Not many teams are in the market for a No. 1 floor general. The few that are most likely won’t want to pay a 29-year-old Thomas.
Expressing love for the Lakers is the diplomatic play—not to mention a potentially beneficial one. If they strike out on this summer’s biggest names, they could consider overpaying him on a one- or two-year deal to preserve their flexibility in future offseasons. They could also end up sliding him into the starting lineup, depending on what happen’s with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope’s free agency and how high they are on Josh Hart leading into his sophomore season.
