Michael Carter-Williams: “I Should Have Been #1 Overall Draft Pick”

22 points, 12 assists, 7 rebounds, and an NBA record 9 steals.  Whew…

Follow that up with consecutive games of 14 points in a win over Washington, then 26 points and 10 dimes vs Chicago, then 18 points and 6 boards in a loss to Golden State, plus 19 points and 7 assists in a rematch against John Wall and the Wizards, and Carter-Williams was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week.

He became the first player in their first week as an NBA player to win the award since Shaquille O’Neal back in 1992.  The record setting week even had NBA legend Magic Johnson predicting that MCW would be this season’s NBA Rookie of the Year.

Let’s take a break, it’s an impressive first week, but can we expect MCW to sustain this pace for the entire season?

Unlikely, but possible considering the overall lack of talent on the Sixer roster and no clear cut back-up point guard to push Carter-Williams for playing time.

Not only that, but he did lead the college ranks in assists most of last season at Syracuse and was the first line of defense for Jim Boeheim’s vaunted 2-3 zone, averaging 3 steals per contest.

In a recent interview, MCW was asked if he had any hard feelings by being overlooked in the draft, sliding to the #11 pick following a stellar sophomore season with the ‘Cuse…..

“Every game I try to prove that I could’ve been the No. 1 pick,” he said. “I have confidence in myself that I should’ve been.”

Confidence is one thing and pure talent is another.  When Magic, Lebron James, and Derrick Rose all say you are that good it must be true.  For Michael’s sake, he should hope the Sixers don’t decide to trade Evan Turner, Spencer Hawes, and Thadeus Young as expected, or he’ll have no one to pass the ball to as the Sixers try and “tank” the season.
