Luke Walton Wants Lonzo Ball to Know That the Los Angeles Lakers Still Have His Back

The Los Angeles Lakers won’t stop riding with Lonzo Ball.

While the rookie point guard created waves when he didn’t join a scuffle during the Lakers’ loss to the Phoenix Suns, the team isn’t sweating it. Someone has already spoken with Ball about the situation, and head coach Luke Walton reiterated, per ESPN.com’s Ohm Youngmisuk, that the squad will continue to have his back as he navigates unrivaled scrutiny among modern-day rookies:

Luke Walton says he talked to Lonzo Ball to let him know the team is behind him if he needs anything with yet another thing potentially for him to deal with after President Trump’s tweet back to LaVar Ball concerning LiAngelo Ball. “He’s got more on his plate than I can ever imagine anyone having especially at his age,” the Lakers coach said. “It is our job to be here and let him know that we support him and believe in him. I don’t know where it gets too much and how he reacts to it. I’ve made a point to talk to him and let him know whether or not he needs it that my belief and our team’s belief in him is 100% there… To me it is all about the fact that we have three young college American students back at home. That is the most important thing. I am not really into the whole argument back and forth. I am just glad they are back home and able to be with their families and get an education.”

Walton isn’t delivering hollow coach-speak. It appears he’s conveying the majority stance in the locker room.
Take Kyle Kuzma for instance. He’s already come out in support of his fellow rookie, and his sentiments haven’t changed in light of Ball heading to the bench rather than shoving some bodies in the name of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (via Lakers Nation’s Harrison Faigen):

It’s good to know cooler heads are prevailing inside the Lakers. Should Ball have participated in breaking up the little rumble at the end of Friday night’s loss? Absolutely. But he’s also a 20-year-old with a lot to learn who has a lot of real-life shit to wade through at the moment. His offensive struggles to date have already warranted bust talk, too. So maybe we should give him a break in this situation, rather than use a harmless split-second judgment call to impugn his character.
