New York Knicks Plan to Chase Jrue Holiday in Free Agency (Poor Jrue Holiday)

In the event you thought the New York Knicks doubling down on the triangle, waiving Brandon Jennings and signing Chasson Randle signaled something of a quasi-traditional rebuild, well, LOL.

Knicks are forever gonna Knicks, peddling the idea that they’re somehow close to being a good basketball team. Their latest plan to complete an insta-rebuild: chase Jrue Holiday in free agency.

From ESPN.com’s Ian Begley:

One player to keep an eye on? New Orleans Pelicans point guard Jrue Holiday. League sources familiar with the matter say that some in the Knicks organization view Holiday as a target in free agency this summer. Team president Phil Jackson expressed interest in trading for Holiday earlier in his tenure, so the Knicks’ current interest in him makes sense. Holiday will likely have plenty of suitors, though.

This is all a moot point. Yes, the Knicks employ Jrue’s brother, Justin. No, that doesn’t matter when you’re the NBA’s foremost crap show currently engulfed in self-inflicted drama involving your team owner, James Dolan, and a team legend in Charles Oakley. And this is nothing to say of Phil Jackson’s treatment of Carmelo Anthony, who has exhibited nothing but loyalty to a franchise, even if it’s in his own, obvious, self-serving way.

Top talents aren’t going to sign with the Knicks. Holiday is a nice option, particularly because he probably won’t command a max deal—unless the New Orleans Pelicans feel compelled to pay him to take fewer shots beside Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins. For the Knicks, though, he’s not a realistic option. No one of his caliber is. Not now, and so long as they continue traveling this harebrained, outdated, impulse-drunk path, not ever.
