Beginning in the 2017-18 NBA season, you will begin seeing advertisements on team jerseys. When this news first broke a few years back, it immediately made the skin on NBA purists crawl. The thought of that is seems very far from anything we’ve seen in major North American team sports.
The 76ers were the first team to jump on board with this. Stub Hub will be paying them to advertise on their jerseys, and next up is the Sacramento Kings. They’ll be teaming up with Blue Diamond Almonds. The Kings will receive $5 million each year for 3 years as part of this deal.
These deals are completely up to the individual team. It will be interesting to see if teams in larger markets will agree to such a thing. At the end of the day, all sports leagues are alive thanks to sponsors, so this is nothing different.
