Kevin Durant Admits It’s Hard Not to Think About Free Agency

Kevin Durant hasn’t entertained many questions pertaining to this summer’s foray into free agency.

But he readily admits he’s thinking about it—or rather, that he’s trying really, really hard not to think about it.

From Michael Singer of USA Today:

“It’s hard for it not to enter your mind,” he said. “There’s a lot of uncertainty going on, because I haven’t really thought that far. But I’m just trying to focus on playing basketball.”

“Once that times comes, I’ll make that decision. I’ll sit down and talk to my closest friends and family and figure it out. But right now I’m just trying to be the best basketball player I can be every single day. I have to be at a high level, an elite level every day, at practice, shootarounds and games, and that’s a tough task so I can’t focus on anything else other than that.”

Durant’s comments came on the heels of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Saturday night loss to the Golden State Warriors, and they’re pretty honest-seeming considering how mid-season free-agency talk is viewed as taboo. It’s like we expect players not to think about their journeys onto the open markets ahead of time, or like we expect them to deny giving it any thought at all.

But everyone is talking about it. Rumors are swirling. Durant is asked about the process, about how he’ll approach it, about how he’s feeling with regard to his upcoming. It’s impossible for him not to think about it.

Does that mean he’s leaning one way or the other, toward one team or another. No. His thoughts probably fluctuate by the day, depending on his mood and whether the Thunder are playing well or not.

And that’s what this time is for, to both figure out what he has in Oklahoma City and what he could have elsewhere.
