Sheryl Swoopes was the first women’s player to receive her own signature sneaker from Nike.
Even in 1996, that was a huge deal. With Marni Gerber as the lead designer, the goal was to cut back on the amount of woman ballers who wouldn’t accept pink market ups and desperately searched for smaller sizes of other iconic basketball sneakers at the time. The tough Durabuck material was called on to contract most of the upper including the strap seen along the midfoot.
Though this might be the Maya Moore generation, there was a point in time where Sheryl Swoopes was the premiere name in women’s basketball.
